Job summary

MBDA UK in Stevenage is seeking a senior Systems Engineering lead to deliver the Engineering Design Record (EDR) and related activities across UK portfolios.

You will work with senior MOD and MBDA stakeholders, guide a small team, and shape engineering planning while navigating a fast-paced, highly visible environment. Travel within the UK to MBDA sites is expected. This role offers opportunities to influence how MBDA delivers critical defence capabilities.

Qualifications

• Understanding of weapon systems and missile design across a product’s life cycle.
• Ability to lead and motivate small teams, including junior colleagues.
• Experience engaging with senior MOD/MBDA management and navigating complex programs.
• Knowledge of Systems Engineering approaches and practice, including requirement management.
• Comfortable handling multiple stakeholder priorities and trade-offs.

Responsibilities

• Lead the delivery of the Engineering Design Record (EDR) and associated activities.
• Engage with senior MOD/MBDA stakeholders to define, agree and verify portfolio requirements.
• Develop and mentor junior team members and manage work packages.
• Present work at the Joint MOD/MBDA Portfolio Engineering Working group and other forums.
• Travel within the UK to MBDA sites as required.

Job description

• Salary: Between £53,000 - £57,000 depending on experience
• Dynamic (hybrid) working: Typically 2 days per week on-site, due to workload classification
• Security Clearance: British Citizen Only .
• Restrictions and/or limitations relating to nationality and/or rights to work may apply.

The opportunity

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Portfolio Systems team to lead the delivery of the Engineering Design Record (EDR) and associated activities. This is a high visibility, stakeholder rich role with an opportunity to influence and shape one of the key engineering activities across the UK Portfolio. You’ll work with a broad range of stakeholders across multiple projects, navigating a fast-paced environment while delivering tangible outputs to MBDA and MOD. This role offers an excellent opportunity to challenge yourself, lead a small team and packages of work, broaden your strategic understanding and build a deeper understanding of MBDA and MOD business practices, whilst developing your knowledge of MBDA’s products and the wider Portfolio. The Portfolio Management Team (PMT) provides a leading role in evolving the way MBDA develops and delivers our products in a joint environment with MOD. The Portfolio seeks to provide greater levels of capability within the UK budget, with increased UK sovereign control and better value for money than our competitors. The Portfolio Systems team supports the development of the engineering coherence through Commonality, Modularity and Reuse across the UK Portfolio of Complex Weapons - current and future - by managing and delivery of the Portfolio Engineering Design Record (EDR). This includes engaging with senior stakeholders across the business to define, agree and verify the Portfolio requirements on Programmes, Equipment Teams, Centres of Excellence and Functional teams. The role will allow the individual to influence the direction of travel and broaden their skillset through a range of supporting Systems Team work packages; such as Intellectual Property, Test & Evaluation Facilities, MBDA Supplier Databases, Systems Studies exploring technical trades-offs, etc. There will be opportunities to develop and lead junior colleagues and present your work at the Joint MOD/MBDA Portfolio Engineering Working group as well as travel within the UK to other MBDA sites. The successful individual will also get exposure and opportunities to support wider Portfolio factors such as platform integration, financial efficiencies, operational performance, exportability, obsolescence and Freedom of Action to the UK MOD.

What we’re looking for from you

• A general understanding of weapon systems, missile systems and design process throughout a product’s life cycle.
• Is comfortable engaging with multiple stakeholders and building effective working relationships across the Portfolio enterprise and the wider business.
• Ability to lead and motivate small teams, including developing and empowering junior colleagues.
• Ability to work with, influence, and where required, challenge senior MOD and MBDA management.
• A flexible mindset, able to tackle problems and develop genuinely innovative solutions for a given challenge.
• An ability to take a big picture view and then select the key tactical issues to focus in on.
• Knowledge of Systems Engineering approaches and practices, ideally familiar with using DOORS, and in particular requirement management.
• Ability to develop and work a System Design / Requirement Trade, including requirement acceptance with stakeholders.
• Ability to operate with autonomy and effectively manage their priorities when presented with issues from multiple stakeholders.
