ABOUT DC THOMSON

At DC Thomson we are a business with a purpose – to make a positive impact on the communities we serve.

Deeply rooted in our communities, we are investing in data, technology, and talent to unlock a new level of understanding about what really matters to our customers. This is how we are shaping the future of media.

We’ve changed the way we work to create a flexible, collaborative, learning-led culture that draws on expertise from across the organisation to create award-winning content and cultural moments that engage audiences to be part of our communities.

ABOUT ENERGY VOICE

Energy Voice (a DC Thomson brand) is expanding its Editorial team with a role for a talented and self-starting Reporter.

Energy Voice provides frontline energy news and views to over 2 million energy industry professionals each year. For over 25 years it has been the eyes and ears of the North Sea energy community. Energy Voice is now the first word for the entire UK energy spectrum, ensuring our readers are in the know and equipped to succeed.

With energy at the heart of the national conversation – raising questions on future resource, jobs and economics amid climate and geopolitical crises – this position will provide a talented journalist with the opportunity to break exclusives and deliver key analysis in multiple formats. Our news platforms, podcasts and events have never been more crucial in helping leaders understand the key factors driving the future of UK energy.

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are seeking a self-starting Reporter with a nose for a story and experience producing original, high-quality journalism for online and/or print, ideally within business, energy or industry sectors. A keen interest in the energy transition, regional economies and infrastructure is a must.

You will be responsible for producing breaking news and progressive, insightful and audience-led content to serve and grow our subscriber base, joining a growing Editorial team spanning the UK.

The role requires the successful candidate to be based in or near one of the following regions: the North West, North East, Yorkshire and the Humber, or Teesside. A strong network plus a deep understanding of the local patch, its communities and industries, and the stories that matter to them, is essential.

It’s an exciting time for you to join us here at Energy Voice as we continuously build a substantial digital subscriber base and continue to serve our loyal print readership via our monthly supplement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Write and edit news and opinion pieces for online and print publications
  • Generate original stories and feature articles
  • Work with the Editorial team to ensure best-in-class reporting
  • Stay ahead of industry developments to ensure Energy Voice is the essential source of breaking news
  • Generate original ideas for articles and AV content
  • Join and contribute to our award-winning podcast (Energy Voice Out Loud)
  • Conduct interviews with industry leaders and build network
  • Push content and personal profile on social channels such as LinkedIn
  • Represent the brand at internal and external events
  • Report from energy sector events and deliver video interviews
  • Liaise with Editorial teams across other DC Thomson publications and brands
  • Position may require occasional moderating of Energy Voice and E-FWD events and production of commercial content
CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS:
  • Degree in journalism or demonstrable and relevant experience
  • A candidate with contacts and familiarity with the UK offshore energy sector (highly desirable)
  • A journalist with experience and/or able to demonstrate finding their own stories and how to make them digitally optimised
  • Has an interest and knowledge of the local patch, the issues which affect it and the industries which support it
  • Has the willingness to embrace new skills and tools in the digital arena such as SEO, social media, video, audio and more while maintaining a mindset of continuous learning and growth
  • Has the ability to work in a team, collaborating on ideas and sharing responsibility for meeting targets
  • Has excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledgeable on the Editors’ Code of Practice, GDPR and media law
  • Has a full driving licence
WHAT WE OFFER:
  • The opportunity to make a meaningful impact
  • A supportive and collaborative team environment
  • Ongoing training and professional development opportunities
  • A competitive salary and benefits package

To apply for this role, please follow our online application process and submit a CV and cover letter.

This is a full-time, permanent position, working 35 hours per week. Whilst you will be primarily working in the field as a boots-on-the-ground Reporter, you will be assigned a DC Thomson office location nearest to your patch to serve as your base. This is not a home-working role as regular on-the-ground reporting and in-person newsgathering are central to this position. We offer a generous package including 34 days holiday, Health Cash Plan, Onsite Staff Gym, excellent Pension, a competitive salary, and many more staff discounts and benefits.

We are an equal opportunity employer and encourage applications from everyone and do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, disability or any other protected characteristics.

Please note that we reserve the right to close the vacancy early once we have received suitable applications. Therefore, please ensure you submit your application as early as possible to avoid disappointment.
