The Times is looking for a retail correspondent to work closely with our retail editor.

This is an exciting opportunity for a self-motivated and ambitious financial journalist to provide informed and engaging news stories, analysis and commentary on the retail sector.

The successful candidate will have a track record of delivering exclusives and the ability to pitch strong ideas for all sections of the paper, across digital and print.

Responsibilities

  • Support the retail editor with news, features and commentary coverage of the retail industry.
  • Bring in regular exclusives and maintain excellent contacts in retail
  • Write in a distinctive and engaging way that meets the brief from the commissioning editor and to the required length
  • Be a self-starter and pitch strong ideas for all sections across print and digital
  • Command respect and authority on retail. Able to communicate that knowledge effectively in print, digital, radio and television to The Times business and general news readers
  • Have a strong knowledge of social media and an ability to use it to increase our readership
  • Regularly pitch and contribute to digital packages that increase engagement and support subscriber growth
  • When required, represent The Times on radio, television and other media - especially our internal stations.
  • Collaborate with production colleagues in design, pictures and sub-editing on elements that enhance the stories you write

Skills and experience

  • Experience working as a reporter for a newspaper, leading website or financial publication
  • Demonstrable interest in retail and business news
  • Experience in digital and a commitment to growing our digital audience
  • Knowledge and experience of SEO
  • Ability to use social media platforms to engage new audiences for The Times
  • Able to work autonomously and to strict deadlines
  • A strong understanding of editorial compliance and regulatory issues
