Renal Senior Electronics Technician

CityHospitals Independent Commercial Enterprises Ltd. (Choice) has anexciting opportunity for the right candidate to fill the position of a SeniorElectronics Technician within the Renal Services of the Clinical EngineeringDepartment. The successful applicantwould be joining a professional team that provides afull medical equipment management service, responsible for commissioning, faultdiagnosis / repair, maintenance and disposal processes within the SunderlandRoyal Hospital and associated sites for renal dialysis services and associatedequipment. You will work closely withstaff and patients to help provide smooth and effective support. The Department also operates an on callservice to provide the Trust with 24 hour emergency cover regarding medicalequipment. Constant clinical advancesmeans that ongoing training is provided so that the team is at the forefront ofnew medical equipment that enters the clinical environment and the networkingcapabilities that are advancing within the medical fields.

Main duties of the job

The Clinical Engineering Renal Services Dept within the EstatesHard FM section of CHOICE is based at the Sunderland Royal Hospital. The main sitescovered by the Renal Services Dept are the Sunderland Royal Hospital, DurhamTreatment Centre and the Washington Primary Care Centre. Home care support forhome dialysis equipment is also provided. The Clinical Engineering teamproviding the service consists of 3 technicians within Renal Services, 7 withinthe Clinical Engineering Dept, a Head of Department and Secretary. The Renal Services Department has Workshopsbased at the Sunderland Royal Hospital, Washington Primary Care Centre andDurham Treatment Centre providing on-site support when required.

Applicationsare invited from persons with a Degree in Electronic/Electrical Engineering orsimilar qualification in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline with aminimum of 3 years relevant experience.You will need to be a team player, have excellent communication andinterpersonal skills to use your own initiative when required. A full driving licence is essential. The Department operates from Monday to Friday 08:00 to 16:30 withan out of hours on call service rota for any emergencies. Someovertime and flexible attitude to work is also required.

TheCHoICE Clinical Engineering Department is responsible for the management of anextensive range of medical equipment and related services throughout the CHSportfolio and any potential additions via business developments that are usedfor the purpose of diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of patients. Serviceprovision is divided into four separate specialist areas:

Clinical Engineering: Renal Dialysis: Paging System: Mobile Radio System

Ateam of specialist technicians provide support for a full equipment management service,responsible for safety testing of new equipment, fault diagnosis/repair andmaintenance within specialist clinical areas and also patients homes including:

RenalDialysis relevant to this post

Vital signsmonitoring

Ventilators(adult and neonatal)

Cardiology

Patient data storage/retrieval and networkingsystems

Technicians also provide an evaluation service for proposed new purchasesand a commissioning service for newly delivered equipment.

Management of the disposal pathway is also provided for end of lifemedical equipment adhering to WEEE regulations.

Fulltechnical support is provided for the hospital paging system, all radiocommunication equipment and networks, ensuring key communications are constantlymaintained throughout client premises.

Trainingfor nurses and other clinical staff is provided in the safe and effective useof medical devices. Competency based training is also provided for specialistclinical areas along with the supervision and training of trainee technicians.

Membersof the Clinical Engineering team are expected to work closely and effectivelywith other technical and clinical staff in providing a professional and highquality service. The team also provides an out of hours on call rota 365 days ayear.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Degree in Electrical / Electronic Engineering or
  • HNC/HND in Electrical/Electronic Engineering plus comprehensive experience and specialist knowledge of medical device technology along with current analogue / digital electronic techniques to degree level. This is gained through formal qualification, plus in-depth experience, specialist manufacturers training courses and Biomedical equipment maintenance practice.
  • Knowledge of human physiology and physiological measurement
  • Formal qualification in physics, Biology or Chemistry.
  • Knowledge of hydraulics, optics, computer networking and audio video systems.
  • Knowledge of human physiology and physiological measurement.
  • Recognised IT competency qualification.
Skills and Knowledge
  • Good communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with all levels of staff in formal and informal situations throughout the CFS business
  • Self-motivated being able to organize own workload in a constantly changing and demanding environment.
  • Ability to switch from one task to another as priorities change. A complex repair can be interrupted by an emergency or higher priority call to a clinical area at any time. This is the norm and not the exception
  • Diagnose and repair faults to component level on a wide range of complex equipment including life support systems.
  • Intense concentration is required when carrying out these repairs and calibration along with the need to use a high level of manual dexterity in order to manipulate precision tools and miniature components
  • Repair work regularly requires the use of service manuals, circuit diagrams and test equipment for the diagnosis and repair of complex faults. This process requires intense and timely concentration that can be broken by interruptions.
  • PC literate with an in depth knowledge of Access, word & XL and competent in the use of the internet and e-mail.
  • Ability to work with a high degree of independence, but still as part of a team.
  • A flexible approach to working hours and conditions.
  • Take part in an out of hours on call rota
  • Self-motivated and ability to work under pressure
  • A positive and helpful attitude when dealing with all staff in any situation.
  • Relationships can be built up with patients throughout treatment causing distress if patients do not recover.

  • Fit & healthy as work does involve lifting heavy equipment.
  • Senior technicians must be aware of the stressful situations that may occur when working on complex medical equipment in emergency situations.
  • Senior Technicians will be expected to work on equipment within clinical areas. They must be aware of the possible exposure to emotionally distressing situations whilst undertaking this work which may be alongside critically-ill patients, sometimes with the patients family present.
  • Must not be colour blind
