Job summary

PLOS is a nonprofit organization driving open science forward. The Associate Editor oversees the editorial process for manuscripts, using prior research experience and internal guidelines to make nuanced editorial decisions across the journals in the portfolio.

The role requires critical evaluation, strong written and oral communication, and the ability to work across time zones while meeting deadlines. Fully remote work from the UK with a two-year FTC and a salary in the established UK range.

Qualifications

• Postgraduate degree in a relevant subject area; a PhD or similar level is preferred.
• Experience in a research environment, publishing, or related field.
• Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills.
• Highly organized and efficient with strong critical assessment and problem-solving abilities.
• Able to work under tight deadlines while maintaining quality and accuracy and to work independently.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a point of escalation for complex and nuanced editorial queries.
• Support other teams to ensure high standards of scientific rigor and editorial integrity.
• Evaluate submissions and make decisions based on reviewers’ comments.
• Participate in activities to develop editorial policy and improve visibility and reputation of journals.
• Handle publication ethics queries.
• Build relationships with members of the academic community.
• Demonstrate a growth mindset and adaptability.
