Job summary

Public Library of Science seeks an Associate Editorial Director for a 2 Year FTC. Fully remote from the UK, you will oversee PLOS Biology and PLOS Medicine, line-manage Editors-in-Chief, and drive editorial strategy and community engagement across journals.

You will lead strategic initiatives, manage budgets, enhance editorial workflows, and collaborate with Editorial Boards and in-house teams to uphold Open Science principles and high-quality scholarly publishing.

Qualifications

• PhD and post-doctoral experience (or equivalent) in a relevant subject area.
• 5+ years of substantial editorial experience with progressively increased managerial responsibility.
• Track record managing a group of successful journals and teams distributed internationally.
• Proven commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in science and scholarly publication.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Develop editorial strategy for a portfolio of journals that supports Open Science, DEI, community engagement and trusted content.
• Identify and develop opportunities to expand the portfolio in line with PLOS strategy.
• Oversee attainment of multi-term performance metrics for journals.
• Partner to develop and manage annual budgets and ensure efficient resource allocation.
• Oversee editorial workflows, systems and reporting.
• Collaborate with Marketing to promote journal content and Open Science practices.
• Ensure cross-journal Centers of Excellence are effectively used.
• Maintain cohesive editorial policies and quality standards across the portfolio.
• Lead cross-journal initiatives and development of systems/workflows.
• Support DEI initiatives and ensure equal opportunities in editorial participation.
