Placements24 is seeking a Remote Mechanical Design Engineer to join a fully remote team developing next‑generation consumer electronics. You will design and refine mechanical aspects of devices, tackle miniaturization and thermal management, and collaborate with cross‑functional teams across time zones.

The role requires a Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering and at least four years of relevant experience, with strong CAD skills (SolidWorks preferred) and experience with PLM/PDM systems.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
• Minimum 4 years of mechanical design experience in consumer electronics or similar compact products.
• Proficiency in 3D CAD software with SolidWorks preferred and experience with PDM/PLM systems.
• Knowledge of plastic injection molding, sheet metal fabrication, and other manufacturing processes.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop mechanical components and systems for consumer electronics using 3D CAD software.
• Create detailed 2D drawings, tolerancing, and manufacturing specifications.
• Conduct DFM and DFA analyses to ensure manufacturability.
• Perform thermal analysis to ensure heat dissipation in compact enclosures.
• Collaborate with electrical engineers, industrial designers, and firmware developers remotely.
• Manage multiple design projects and deliver documentation and prototypes on schedule.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and develop mechanical components and systems for consumer electronic products using 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Fusion 360).
• Create detailed 2D drawings, tolerancing, and specifications for manufacturing.
• Conduct design-for-manufacturability (DFM) and design-for-assembly (DFA) analyses.
• Perform thermal simulations and analysis to ensure effective heat dissipation in compact enclosures.
• Investigate and resolve mechanical design issues encountered during prototyping, testing, and production.
• Collaborate closely with electrical engineers, industrial designers, and firmware developers through virtual communication channels.
• Manage multiple design projects concurrently, ensuring timely delivery of design documentation and prototypes.
• Research and recommend materials and manufacturing processes suitable for high-volume consumer electronics production.
• Contribute to the product development lifecycle from concept ideation through to mass production, maintaining a strong focus on user experience and product reliability.
• Work independently and effectively as part of a remote-first engineering team, ensuring seamless communication and collaboration across different time zones.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
• A minimum of 4 years of experience in mechanical design, with a significant portion focused on consumer electronics, portable devices, or similar compact products.
• Proficiency in 3D CAD software (SolidWorks preferred) and experience with PDM/PLM systems.
• Knowledge of plastic injection molding, sheet metal fabrication, and other relevant manufacturing processes.
• Experience with thermal analysis and simulation tools.
• Familiarity with product testing methodologies and standards for consumer electronics.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and a strong understanding of mechanical principles.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and communicate clearly in a remote setting.
• Strong portfolio showcasing previous design work on consumer products.
