Job summary

Placements24 is seeking an experienced Lead Molecular Geneticist to direct diagnostic development in a remote-first setting. The role involves leading a team of scientists from East London, Eastern Cape, ZA, with global impact on genetic testing strategies and regulatory alignment.

You will oversee assay design, validation, and implementation, driving excellence across PCR, qPCR, NGS, and related technologies while mentoring staff and contributing to publications.

Qualifications

• PhD in Molecular Genetics, Human Genetics, Genomics, or a related field.
• Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in molecular genetics with substantial assay development for diagnostics.
• Proven experience leading scientific teams and managing complex R&D projects.
• Expertise in molecular diagnostic technologies including PCR, qPCR, extraction, and NGS.
• Strong understanding of clinical diagnostics, regulatory affairs (FDA, CE-IVDR), and quality management in labs.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and leadership abilities.
• Experience working in a fully remote team environment is essential.

Responsibilities

• Lead development, optimization, and validation of molecular genetic assays for diagnostic use.
• Oversee assay development lifecycle from concept to regulatory submission and implementation.
• Mentor a team of molecular geneticists and lab staff.
• Ensure compliance with ISO 13485, CAP, and quality systems.
• Collaborate with bioinformatics, clinical affairs, and product management.
• Stay updated on advances in molecular genetics and diagnostic methodologies.
• Troubleshoot assay issues and implement corrective actions.
• Contribute to scientific publications and presentations.
