Job summary

Darwin Recruitment is seeking an experienced Freelance PHP Developer to support and enhance a portfolio of established web applications used by a large customer base. The role focuses on development, maintenance, integrations and platform improvements with attention to reliability, security and performance.

Based in West Sussex, the position offers hybrid working with at least one onsite day per week and an initial 6-month contract outside IR35.

Qualifications

• Extensive PHP development experience in production web apps.
• Strong MySQL/database skills.
• Experience with Linux-hosted applications.
• REST API integration and OAuth2 knowledge.
• Git and GitHub experience; CI/CD know-how (GitHub Actions desirable).
• Experience supporting and troubleshooting live applications.
• Ability to gather requirements from stakeholders.
• Experience using Claude for AI development.

Responsibilities

• Develop, maintain and enhance PHP applications and integrations.
• Investigate and resolve defects and production incidents.
• Deliver application upgrades, dependency updates and security improvements.
• Build and improve automated deployment and CI/CD processes.
• Work with stakeholders to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
