Job summary

Canonical is seeking an Engineering Director to lead multiple teams of engineers across time zones, driving high-quality software, performance, and security. You will hire and develop engineering managers and staff engineers, coach teams, and ensure disciplined processes while aligning with strategic goals.

As a remote-first leader, you will collaborate with leaders across products, travel twice per year for company events, and set high expectations for work ethic and delivery.

Qualifications

• Academic excellence demonstrated in higher education and track record of strong performance.
• Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM, or compelling alternative path.
• Extensive management experience with leadership across multiple eng teams.
• Outstanding Linux-based software engineering track record.

Responsibilities

• Lead multiple engineering teams and engineering managers.
• Develop culture and champion Canonical practices across teams.
• Hire staff engineers for performance and quality roles.
• Coach, mentor, and provide career feedback to staff.
• Measure team health and productivity indicators.
• Ensure delivery quality including community contributions and docs.
• Defend disciplined engineering processes and progress against goals.
• Represent product to stakeholders and customers.
• Develop and evangelise engineering and organisational practices.
• Plan and manage progress on agreed goals.
