Job summary

University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust invites applications for a Band 5 ACC-qualified Clinical Coder. You will abstract from patient notes, assign codes to National standards, and maintain reference manuals. Training sessions and development opportunities are available.

Role focuses on complex coding, data quality, and supporting Payment by Results. Sponsorship is not available and the R&R Premium applies to Band 5 from December 2026.

Responsibilities

  • Take lead responsibility for coding of complex activity to high quality standards.
  • Maintain coding accuracy when audited and in line with national requirements.
  • Assist management in validation of coded data and monitor data quality issues.
  • Cover for absent team members and extract clinical information from notes across wards.
  • Participate in development and management of coding services to improve accuracy.
  • Provide accurate, timely coded data for all episodes using ICD10 and OPCS4

Job description

To undertake the role of a Clinical Coder to clinical groups or specialties as appropriate, abstracting from patient notes and other information sources and assigning suitable codes onto the Trust’s patient administration system in line with National standards. Attend training sessions as necessary and work to maintain allocated reference manuals and standards manuals so that they are always up to date with national guidance.

We are recruiting Band 5 ACC-qualified Clinical Coders (with a 10% Recruitment & Retention Premium).

Please note that only the Band 5 role is subject to the R&R Premium (subject to renewal in December 2026). This will be applied upon commencement of the role. This will be included in the salary package from the start of employment.

Responsibilities
  • Take lead responsibility for the coding of complex activity including deceased patients to the highest standard of quality coded data as verified by audit
  • Maintain coding accuracy when audited in line with national requirements
  • Assist the Management team in validation of coded data and to monitor and report on performance and data quality issues as appropriate
  • Organise and take lead responsibility for the cover of absent team members, extraction of clinical information from patient’s case notes and the coding of this information across a variety of wards and specialities
  • Participate in the development and management of coding services to enhance the accuracy of clinical coding
  • Exhibit expert knowledge of clinical coding data aspects in support of Payment by Results and participate in the management of the clinical coding service to provide accurate, timely and completed coded clinical data for all episodes of care for all specialties within the Trust using ICD10 and OPCS4
