Job summary

IVC Evidensia’s Blaise Veterinary Referral Hospital in Birmingham is seeking a confident Surgery and Anaesthesia Nurse to join our specialist team on a full-time basis. You’ll provide high‑quality nursing care to referral patients, assist with anaesthesia planning and monitoring, and support recovery and client communication.

As a Registered Veterinary Nurse with the RCVS, you’ll work across Soft Tissue, Orthopaedics and Neurology, contributing to a busy 24‑hour referral service.

Qualifications

• Registration as a Veterinary Nurse with the RCVS.
• Experience in a busy referral hospital is desirable.
• Strong interest in surgery and anaesthesia.
• Proficiency in anesthesia planning and monitoring.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced multidisciplinary team.
• Commitment to clinical governance and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

• Support anaesthesia services across the hospital with anaesthetists and team.
• Assist with anaesthetic planning, induction, monitoring and recovery.
• Use multiparameter monitors to ensure patient safety.
• Support surgical services across Soft Tissue, Orthopaedics and Neurology.
• Prepare patients, theatres and equipment for procedures.
• Scrub assist surgeons when required and maintain theatre sterility.

Located in Longbridge, Birmingham, our veterinary hospital is one of the largest multidisciplinary referral hospitals in the UK. With state-of-the‑art equipment to treat up to 10,000 pets a year, our brilliant team provide the very best veterinary care and support to clients, pets and referring vets.

Our veterinary referral services include Anaesthesia and Analgesia, Cardiology, Diagnostic Imaging, ECC, Internal Medicine, Interventional Radiology, Neurology, Oncology, Orthopaedics and Soft Tissue Surgery.

At Blaise, we have a specialist‑led 24‑hour emergency and critical care service in partnership with Vets Now, providing out‑of‑hours and emergency pet care for Birmingham and surrounding areas.

How You’ll Make a Difference

As a Surgery and Anaesthesia Nurse, you will be an integral member of the clinical team, delivering high‑quality nursing care to referral patients while supporting excellent client experiences.

You’ll support patients from admission through to discharge, assisting with surgical procedures, anaesthesia planning and monitoring, recovery care and communication across the clinical team. You’ll also help ensure facilities and equipment are maintained to a high standard, supporting the smooth running of both surgery and anaesthesia services.

Working Pattern

• Full‑time role
• 40 hours per week over 4 days, Day off varies each week
• Shifts rotate between 8:00am to 6:00pm, 9:00am to 7:00pm and 10:00am to 8:00pm

General Responsibilities Include:

• Support anaesthesia services across the hospital, working closely with anaesthetists and clinical colleagues
• Assist with anaesthetic planning, induction, monitoring and recovery for referral patients
• Use and interpret multiparameter monitoring equipment to support patient safety
• Support surgical services across Soft Tissue, Orthopaedics and Neurology
• Prepare patients, theatres, equipment and surgical environments for procedures
• Assist surgeons as scrub assistant where required
• Maintain theatre sterility and high standards of infection control

• Registration as a Veterinary Nurse with the RCVS
• Referral experience, or strong experience in a busy hospital environment

• Good understanding of anaesthesia, analgesia and patient monitoring
• Confidence using and interpreting multiparameter monitoring equipment
• Excellent attention to detail and the ability to remain focused in a busy environment
• A commitment to evidence-based practice, clinical governance and continuous improvement
