This is a great opportunity to join our friendly and supportive team. You will work alongside a number of veterinary certificate holders, as well as having the option to progress in specialised nursing fields.

About You

We are looking for an experienced, dedicated member of staff who:

  • Is comfortable with fitting into the clinical rota and running nurse clinics, and proficient in laboratory work, inpatient care, anaesthetics and monitoring, and all other general nursing duties.
  • Is willing to work at either branch during weekdays to fall in line with the needs of the business, and cover weekends as part of a 1:7 rota.
  • Has an interest in primarily small animal and occasional exotic work.

The Role

The main purpose of the post is to support the smooth operation of the clinical activities within the branch by providing inpatient care and assisting with procedures and consultations, general nursing duties, promoting client communication and working within the Terms of the RCVS Guide to Professional Conduct for Nurses.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Providing nursing care to our inpatients, to include nutrition, administration of medication, wound management and rehabilitation.
  • Sedating and monitoring patients for procedures under the direction of the Veterinary Surgeon.
  • Independently carry out nursing duties such as monitoring anaesthesia, intubating patients, assisting with surgical procedures, assisting with consultations, patient handling and restraint, taking blood and urine samples, placing intravenous catheters, placing bandages, cleaning wounds and removing stitches.
  • Proper restraining and positioning of patients requiring x-rays, as well as taking radiographs when instructed by a Veterinary Surgeon.
  • Dispensing and administering (under the direct supervision of a Veterinary Surgeon) medication to animals, maintaining accurate stock control and following all protocols relating to drug holding, dispensing and handling, and giving clear and accurate instructions to clients when dispensing medication.
  • Maintaining accurate patient records with regards to all clinical notes, treatment, diagnoses, client communication and client/patient information.
  • Ensuring that all procedures and consumables are accurately entered onto the patients’ records in order to keep the invoice up to date at all times during their stay.
  • Where applicable, supervision and teaching of Veterinary Nursing students during placement or employment periods. This could include undertaking a clinical coaching qualification and acting as a Clinical Coach.
  • Participating in a Veterinary Nurse rota for 40 hours per week (based upon 5 x 8 hour days), which will also include working weekends on a 1:7 rotational basis.
  • Maintaining a good working relationship with all team members, and communicating in an effective and pleasant manner with colleagues and clients.
  • Carry out practice cleaning, equipment sterilising, stock ordering, reception cover shifts and all other reasonable duties as requested by your line manager.
