At Bridgeport Hospital, we are committed to providing quality medical care that is coordinated and centered on the patient's specific needs. We strive to achieve benchmarks as a Patient Centered Medical Home and provide healthcare where patients are at the center of their care team. All employees contribute to the team approach, promoting access, continuous, comprehensive care, and quality improvement.

As an integral member of the Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS), the Registered Professional Nurse (RN) upholds the YNHHS mission, vision, values, and strategic initiatives to provide the highest level of patient-centered care. The RN practices within the legal and ethical framework established by relevant standards and guidelines, including the Connecticut Nurse Practice Act, ANA standards, and the YNHHS Professional Practice Model. The role of the RN is exemplified by leadership, delegation, collaboration, effective communication, and ensuring quality outcomes.

The RN provides care that:

  • Establishes and maintains a therapeutic relationship with the patient and family, incorporating cultural and diversity considerations
  • Communicates and collaborates effectively with the patient, family, and healthcare team
  • Respects the patient's values, preferences, and needs in holistic care, data collection, outcome formulation, and evaluation
Responsibilities
  1. Standards of Practice: Guided by ANA standards, the RN utilizes the nursing process—assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation—to deliver competent nursing care.
  2. Standards of Professional Performance: The RN demonstrates professional behavior in ethics, culturally congruent practice, communication, collaboration, leadership, education, evidence-based practice, quality, evaluation, resource utilization, and environmental health. The RN is accountable for their actions and engages in leadership appropriate to their role.
Qualifications

Education: Graduation from an accredited nursing school; BSN preferred. All new RNs must have current BCLS certification or obtain it within one month of hire.

Experience: All RNs are encouraged to advance through the SPIRE clinical program.

Licensure: Licensed and registered in Connecticut. Specialty certification is highly encouraged.
