Your skills will save lives

The RNLI is one of Britain’s best loved charities. Every day we save lives at sea – and you can be part of our vital mission. Experiencing some of Britain’s most stunning coastlines, you will travel around Somerset, Devon, and Dorset plus opportunities to visit the Channel Isles as you work on the cutting-edge facilities, assets and equipment at our Lifeboat stations and Lifeguard support centres.

About the job

We are looking for a Technical Maintenance Engineer to make your mark and really get stuck in. Whether you’re modifying our equipment, scheduling planned preventative maintenance, rectify defective equipment, overseeing contractors or directing stock control, you’ll ensure our technology performs as well as our teams, so we never let anyone down and you’ll enjoy the unique satisfaction of doing something truly life changing.

About you

In addition to working on our inshore and all-weather Lifeboats, you will find yourself involved with our Lifeguard equipment, Jet ski, Quads, Ford Rangers, also various launching equipment.

This means you could join us from an agricultural, commercial, plant, military or vehicular background. At the same time, you will require:

- A Level 3 NVQ, City & Guilds or HNC qualification in a mechanical engineering discipline or equivalent professional experience.

- Broad electrical knowledge.

- Proven ability to use your initiative and operate independently.

- Meticulous attention to detail.

- A good level of physical fitness is preferable as you may spend some of your time at sea.

- A time-served apprenticeship in a marine or vehicle-based setting (ideal but not vital).

- IOSH Working Safely, Working at Height, PASMA and PA testing certification (again useful but by no means crucial).

Finally, it’s essential that you have a full driving licence. A B+E licence for towing and a forklift licence would be very useful, but we will provide comprehensive training if necessary.

Your rewards

At the RNLI, we’re passionate about looking after our staff, so you can expect:

- An exceptional pension scheme, with a 16% employer contribution.

- 26 days’ annual leave plus bank holidays.

- Health and dental cash plan.

- Meals and expenses paid whilst you’re on duty.

- Heavy investment in your professional development.

- Life assurance.

Your future

A career with the RNLI could take you anywhere in Britain – and anywhere you want to go. Along the way, you will enjoy the thrill of knowing that you’ve helped to save lives and the fun of operating within a team with exceptional camaraderie. What we do really matters, so you can make the sea a safer place for everyone.

Safeguarding

The RNLI is committed to safeguarding; protecting a person’s health, wellbeing, and human rights, enabling them to live free from harm, abuse, and neglect. We expect all employees and volunteers to share this commitment and have a zero-tolerance approach. The suitability of all prospective employees and volunteers will be assessed during the recruitment process in line with this commitment. This will include relevant criminal record checks being carried out dependent on the eligibility of the role. (England & Wales; DBS check, Scotland; Disclosure Scotland PVG, Northern Ireland; Access NI, Republic of Ireland; Garda Vetting; International, International Child Protection Certificate process).

Diversity at the RNLI

Our staff and volunteers have been saving lives at sea without prejudice for 200 years. We respect and value diversity of background, skills and perspectives within our teams, and consider it essential to help us deliver a world-class lifesaving service. We are an inclusive organisation and welcome applications from everyone. In addition to having the skills needed for the role, we also look for applicants who share our commitment to living our RNLI values (trustworthy, courageous, selfless, and dependable), and helping us work towards Our Vision: To save Every One.
