Job summary

Roxel Group is seeking a Production Technical Manager to provide technical leadership across production and in-service product portfolio. You will ensure manufacturability, robustness and lifecycle support, working with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Programmes and Supply Chain.

The role leads engineering change management, supports design authorities, and drives continuous improvement while maintaining safety and regulatory compliance. On-site role with full-time hours.

Roxel is an Anglo-French Company that designs, develops and manufactures a range of solid propellant rocket motors for use in tactical missiles. Its operations are spread across several sites in the UK and France and it has an annual turnover of about £250M and nearly 1000 staff, with 300 in the UK.

The Production Technical Manager is responsible for providing technical leadership across Roxel's production and in-service product portfolio, ensuring the continued technical integrity, manufacturability and supportability of products throughout their lifecycle.

Working closely with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Programmes and Supply Chain functions, the role leads the resolution of complex technical challenges affecting production, a leader in the embodiment of robust engineering change management and provides technical leadership for In-Service Surveillance programmes.

The Production Technical Manager acts as a technical authority for products in manufacture, ensuring engineering solutions are technically robust, delivered efficiently and fully compliant with customer, regulatory and business requirements. Operates closely and alongside the Chief Engineer who is accountable for the product technical authority under the authority of the Head of Engineering.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Technical Leadership

  • Provide technical leadership for production products, ensuring rapid resolution of complex engineering challenges affecting manufacturing and product performance.
  • Act as the engineering focal point for technical issues arising during manufacture, assembly, integration and product support activities.
  • Line management of engineers within the production technical support team (note: at time of writing this job specification represents a new position and as such the Production Technical Manager will initially need to support in the creation and recruitment of the newly formed team).
  • Provide technical direction across multidisciplinary engineering teams to ensure consistent, high-quality engineering solutions.
  • Assist in the development and training of design authorities and contribute to their training plan.
  • Support Design Authorities and the Head of Engineering in maintaining the technical integrity of existing products.
  • Ensure engineering decisions are appropriately documented, justified and communicated across the business.

Production Support

  • Responsible for leading technical support activities for products throughout manufacture and in-service life.
  • Responsible for resolutions of product production non-conformances, technical failures and customer issues, identifying robust corrective and preventative actions.
  • Responsible for approving product design related production non-conformances, production process and manufacturing method updates.
  • Leading the coordination with appropriate design SMEs and technical authorities required in a production technical support enquiry.
  • Provide engineering support to Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain and Programme teams to minimise production disruption and maintain delivery performance.
  • Support customer technical queries relating to production and in-service products.

Production Change Management

  • Lead the engineering support for embodiment of product design production change management activities once pre-production design validation has completed.
  • Understand and support product components and materials obsolescence and the timely controlled introduction into production.
  • Responsible for leading the technical support and product validation definition for changes to production manufacturing equipment and tooling.
  • Support continuous improvement of engineering change processes across the business.

In-Service Surveillance

  • Responsible for leading the technical delivery of In-Service Surveillance activities and customer technical deliverables.
  • Analyse surveillance data and product performance trends to identify technical risks and opportunities for product improvement.
  • Develop engineering recommendations to enhance product reliability, safety and lifecycle performance.
  • Support customer reviews relating to product performance and service life.

Stakeholder Management

  • Build effective working relationships across Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Operations, Programmes and Supply Chain.
  • Provide technical guidance to internal stakeholders and customers where required.
  • Support design reviews, technical governance activities and programme reviews.
  • Support Level 3 QRQC daily reviews to represent Engineering technical support to production and lead on the rapid closure and reporting of any Engineering action.

Safety

  • Promote zero harm objective by operating in accordance with any Health, Safety and Environmental policies and procedures to ensure the safety and wellbeing of staff and visitors and proactively promote and support SWIM.
  • Ensure safe methods of working and H&S standards are utilised in all processes targeting zero harm.
  • Ensure Health and Safety standards are fully communicated and understood by relevant team members and stakeholders.

People Management

  • Support and document the teams’ development by carrying out regular PDR’s for team members.
  • Using SMART objectives, ensure expectations are clear to maximise efficient productivity and achievement of targets through adequate staffing levels.
  • Target 100% attendance by monitoring and managing attendance levels and timekeeping for the team, including conducting of return to work interviews and absence reviews when required.
  • Ensure adequate staffing levels are met by managing leave requests.
  • Address and resolve performance issues in a timely manner using techniques such as informal performance counselling up to and including disciplinary investigations and hearings as appropriate.
  • Implement training and development activities in line with skills required to minimise SPF’s and encourage multi-skilling.
  • Manage training and guidance to employees for relevant process.
  • Lead by example, providing a positive environment and influence amongst the team.
  • Support and mentor the team in trouble‑shooting techniques providing guidance as required.
  • Encourage team working and sharing of best practices amongst the team and business.

  • Promote engineering excellence and best practice across the Engineering function.
  • Identify opportunities to improve product robustness, manufacturability, reliability and engineering efficiency.

Experience and Background

Qualifications:

Essential Qualifications

  • Degree or HND in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or a related Engineering discipline.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng), or working towards professional registration.
  • Project Management qualification.

Experience:

Essential Experience

  • Significant engineering experience within Aerospace, Defence or another highly regulated manufacturing environment.
  • Experience supporting products through manufacture and into service.
  • Strong understanding of engineering change management and configuration control.
  • Experience leading investigations into complex technical and production issues.
  • Demonstrable experience managing engineering stakeholders across multiple disciplines.
  • Strong understanding of product lifecycle management.
  • Experience operating within EN9100 and regulated engineering environments.
  • Excellent technical problem-solving and decision-making skills.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience supporting propulsion, defence systems or complex electromechanical products.
  • Knowledge of obsolescence management.
  • Experience leading In-Service Surveillance or product support activities.
  • Knowledge of APQP, FMEA, Root Cause Analysis and continuous improvement methodologies
