Roxel is an Anglo-French Company that designs, develops and manufactures a range of solid propellant rocket motors for use in tactical missiles. Its operations are spread across several sites in the UK and France and it has an annual turnover of about £250M and nearly 1000 staff, with 300 in the UK.

The role purpose is to establish, deploy and develop a requirements management and systems engineering process for our solid rocket motor programmes. Over the long term this will involve making systems engineering a shared discipline owned by every engineer rather and the sole responsibility of a siloed function. We are working towards the engineering culture often associated with the most effective modern aerospace organisations captured in the phrase: "everyone is a systems engineer, and no one is". A central challenge of this is balancing the rigor which is essential for our safety-critical propulsion systems with a lean, low bureaucracy approach that engineers will be willing to adopt. The successful candidate will help lead this transformation and guide other engineers to understand the systems engineering mindset.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain the requirements management and systems engineering methodology, using established frameworks (e.g. NASA SE Handbook, INCOSE, ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288 & 29148) as a base and modifying to suit the organisation’s scale and culture.
  • Own and configure the ALM/requirements management system including definition, refinement & derivation, architecture, traceability, baselines and change control.
  • Build and champion the systems engineering capability of the wider engineering team through worked examples, mapped process diagrams and hands-on training.
  • Prototype and prove the process on development programs before scaling it across the business.
  • Develop our ALM tool’s (Codebeamer) project architecture, mapping it to the systems engineering processes that you help develop.
  • Define links between requirements and physical components, ensuring bidirectional traceability of all system components with their parent requirements/user needs.
  • Perform any other duties necessary, as requested to by the business to carry out job function.
Experience and Background
Essential Qualifications
  • A formal qualification (degree or equivalent) in systems, aerospace, mechanical or related engineering discipline.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Professional membership / Chartered Engineer (CEng) of a relevant institute e.g., Institute of Mechanical Engineers, Royal Aeronautical Society, Institute of Explosive Engineers etc.
Essential Experience
  • Minimum of 3 years in an engineering team environment developing products to meet customer requirements.
  • A sound understanding of systems engineering principles (ConOps, defining/refining requirements, interface definition, trade studies, verification & validation).
  • Familiarity with the Systems Engineering V-Model and its application to the design process.
  • Experience with an ALM tool (IBM DOORS, PTC Codebeamer, Siemens Polarion, Jama Connect)
  • IT literate with experience of working with Microsoft Office tools (Power Point, Excel, Word, etc)
  • An interest and aptitude in both the theory and practical aspects of engineering and in particular rocket motor design.
  • An ability to assimilate and evaluate technical information from a wide range of disciplines with a high attention to detail.
  • An ability to present complex problems clearly and logically to other specialist and non‑specialist engineers.
  • Experience working with safety-critical products and knowledge of regulatory standards requirements e.g. DEF STAN 07-085.
  • Excellent document/report writing skills.
Desirable Experience
  • Experience using Codebeamer as a requirements management tool.
  • Experience writing and refining requirements in a safety critical aerospace environment.
  • Full product lifecycle experience – taking single product from concept to production (on the systems side of development).
Person Specification
  • Demonstrates behaviours that align with Roxel’s values of ‘Commitment’, ‘Innovation’, ‘Trust’ and ‘Teamwork’.
  • Proven ability to manage projects through the entire engineering development lifecycle
  • Motivated and driven to deliver results according to defined timescales and expected standards
  • Strong communicator with the ability to build relationships with the customer and other internal technical specialists
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Positive attitude and work ethic
  • Able to manage own time and prioritise tasks
