Job summary

The AA is seeking an HGV Recovery Driver to join our team and provide calm, confident roadside assistance. You’ll recover vehicles safely, reassure customers in stressful moments and work independently across varied locations, while staying part of a supportive team.

Successful candidates will hold a Category C (HGV Class 2) licence (CE advantageous) with Driver CPC and tachograph card; with flexibility for evenings, weekends and holidays required due to breakdown patterns.

Qualifications

• A full Category C (HGV Class 2) driving licence is essential.
• A valid Driver CPC and a digital tachograph card.
• Flexibility to work shift patterns, including evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays.

Responsibilities

• Delivering exceptional service by safely recovering vehicles and reassuring customers during breakdowns, helping them get back on the road quickly.
• Working independently across varied locations and conditions, while remaining a valued part of a supportive team.
• Solving problems on the spot, using your technical skills and calm approach to handle a wide range of roadside situations.
• Staying solution-focused and compliant with EU Regulations & WTD, representing The AA with professionalism and a drive to always “Push for Better.”

Job description

Shifts: Rolling roster, work 18 days out of every 28, with two full weekends off.

Standard Shift Duration: 9 hours and 45 minutes, including a 45-minute break.

Flexibility Required: While standard shifts are under 10 hours, end-of-shift flexibility is essential. You may be required to work up to 12 hours (including breaks) depending on operational needs.

Depot Postcode: RM15 4YD

To be eligible for this role you must live within 25 miles or 1 hours travel from the depot.

As an HGV Recovery Driver, you’ll often work independently, but the moment you step out of your truck, you become a source of calm and confidence. With empathy and resilience, you’ll support members through stressful moments, using your technical expertise to recover vehicles safely and efficiently. Whether it’s transporting a vehicle to a garage or helping someone reach their destination, you’ll make a real difference in their day and their journey.

Qualifications

What do I need?

• A full Category C (HGV Class 2) driving licence is essential. If you already hold a Category CE (HGV Class 1) licence — great! If not, don’t worry — we’ll support you in gaining it.
• A valid Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) and a digital tachograph card.
• Confidence using and adapting to new technology — we’ll provide the tools; you bring the curiosity.
• Flexibility to work shift patterns, including evenings, weekends, and Bank Holidays because breakdowns don’t stick to a schedule.
