Job summary

A leading school in Milton Keynes seeks a dedicated Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) with expertise in Read Write Inc. and supporting children with Special Educational Needs (SEN). Reading Specialist / HLTA - SEN Focus (with Read Write Inc. experience)
Location: Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire
Full-Time / Part-Time

Are you a dedicated reading specialist with experience in Read Write Inc. and a passion for supporting children with additional needs?

Join a welcoming and inclusive mainstream school in Milton Keynes as a Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) with a focus on Special Educational Needs and Literacy Intervention starting June 2025.

This role offers a fantastic opportunity to make a measurable impact on young learners' reading progress and confidence-within a nurturing, supportive school that values inclusive education and every child's potential.

As an HLTA with a focus on reading and SEN, you will take a lead role in delivering targeted literacy interventions, especially phonics-based support using Read Write Inc., and ensuring all students can access the curriculum. You'll work closely with class teachers, the SENCO, and external professionals to support students with a range of additional needs.

  • Deliver structured reading interventions (including Read Write Inc.) to individuals and small groups

  • Provide whole-class support and cover supervision when required

  • Support the implementation of personalised learning and behaviour plans

  • Adapt phonics and literacy resources to meet diverse learning needs

  • Track and assess student reading progress, feeding back to staff and families

  • Work collaboratively with the SENCO, literacy leads, and external therapists

  • Promote a positive, inclusive classroom environment where all learners thrive

  • Proven experience supporting children with SEN (e.g., dyslexia, speech/language needs, autism)

  • Read Write Inc. experience (essential)

  • HLTA qualification or equivalent senior TA experience

  • Strong understanding of phonics, early reading, and inclusive literacy strategies

  • Confident leading small groups and supporting whole-class learning

  • Empathetic, patient, and committed to pupil progress and well-being
