Job summary

Shepton Mallet Town Council is seeking a practical grounds maintenance operative to help care for Collett Park and the town centre. The role involves hedge trimming, pruning, planting and watering, plus regular pond/island upkeep.

You will repaint and mend street furniture, remove graffiti, and hand weed along the town centre boundary. You’ll work with the Somerset Council contractor and support community events to foster active local involvement.

Qualifications

• Practical grounds maintenance skills preferred.

Responsibilities

• Maintain Collett Park and town centre grounds, including hedges, borders and planting, with watering where required.
• Clean and maintain the pond and island areas as needed.
• Repaint and mend street furniture, remove graffiti, and hand weed within the town centre boundary.
• Liaise with the Somerset Council contractor responsible for ground care to ensure standards.
• Support community events and foster good relations with local businesses and groups.

Job description

The aim of this role is to maintain high standards of appearance and condition in Collett Park and Shepton Mallet town centre. Collett Park is approximately 14 acres of green space including lawns, mature trees, a stream, boating pond, and play equipment. This role will involve regular maintenance of planted borders, including hedge trimming, pruning, planting and watering where required. Work will also be required to clean and maintain the pond and island.

The role will at the same time be key to keeping the town centre attractive, clean and tidy. This will involve managing practical upkeep including repainting and mending street furniture, removing graffiti, and hand weeding within the boundary of the town centre map (attached). A good working relationship with the Somerset Council contractor responsible for ground care will be important.

The role will also help with works fostering good community relations with businesses and community organisations and helping to nurture a culture of active shop front management in the town centre. The role will also involve occasional support for community-led events and activities such as litter picking events or weeding events.
