Job summary

Surrey Independent Living Charity is seeking a proactive Support Worker to accompany a young man with additional needs on community outings and activities. You will help plan engaging days, provide companionship, and support safe travel between venues.

The role requires empathy, reliability, and the ability to adapt to Joe's comfort levels. Weekend availability and transport flexibility are valued to build trust and meaningful experiences.

Qualifications

• A patient and enthusiastic person with a genuine interest in supporting individuals with additional needs.
• Ability to travel confidently, using public transport or own vehicle.
• Respectful and able to adapt to Joe's comfort levels and boundaries.

Responsibilities

• Support Joe during community activities and outings (e.g., visits to museums, railways, swimming).
• Help shape daily plans with Joe and encourage his participation in decisions.
• Ensure safety and well‑being during activities and transport.
• Respect Joe's comfort levels and manage interactions with pets in the home.

Hello! Are you a proactive, fun and personable Personal Assistant, who likes to have fun with a young man with additional needs? You'd be enjoying meaningful, engaging time out.

Joe has a wide range of interests including history (WWI,WWII) steam trains, comedy, politics, swimming, museums, walking and National Trust properties. He enjoys exploring new places and building positive, trusting relationships. He is honest, fun, you always end up laughing and if he feel comfortable with you, you can have many conversations. He is great value for money.

• Hours: About 3 hours every other Saturday to begin with (daytime), with the possibility of additional hours, including night care, as trust and familiarity build
• Activities: trips to surrounding areas. Joe would choose what to do and at the moment he would love to go swimming. He also likes visiting museums, steam railways, walks, and more - the PA is encouraged to bring ideas and help Joe shape the plan for his day

About Joe:

Joe is an active volunteer, participating in a wide range of community roles including food bank work, local magazine delivery, volunteers at Chartwell as a shadowed Room Steward, and drama groups. He enjoys reading (8-12 age range), jigsaws, classic British comedy (Dad's Army, Only Fools and Horses, etc.), and is part of his local church choir. Joe thrives with routine, kindness, and a supportive environment.

What We're Looking For:

• A patient and enthusiastic person with a genuine interest in supporting individuals with additional needs
• Someone who can travel confidently, using either public transport or their own vehicle
• An individual with shared interests (history, films, trains, comedy, etc.) is a bonus but not essential
• Must be respectful of Joe's comfort levels (he is scared of dogs and may be quiet until trust builds)
• Comfortable around cats (a cat lives in the home)
