Job summary

Veolia in Cheshire is seeking a Mobile Mechanical Technician / Fitter to install, maintain and repair industrial utilities across two sites. You will service steam and LTHW boilers, CHP engines, compressors and related plant with a focus on safety and reliability.

Qualifications

  • Recognised mechanical engineering qualification such as City & Guilds, NVQ/SVQ Level 3, BTEC, ONC or equivalent.
  • Proven experience as a Mechanical Technician/Fitter or in a similar industrial engineering role.
  • Practical experience with industrial boilers, CHP systems, engines, pressure systems or energy plant.
  • Strong knowledge of pumps, valves, pipework, bearings, couplings, seals and rotating machinery with fault-finding experience.
  • Able to read engineering drawings, P&IDs and manuals, and work safely within permit-to-work and isolation procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out planned, corrective and breakdown maintenance on steam and LTHW boilers, CHP engines, generators, compressors and associated plant.
  • Inspect, diagnose, dismantle, repair, overhaul and recommission mechanical equipment including pumps, valves, pipework, heat exchangers and rotating machinery.
  • Replace bearings, seals, belts, couplings, filters and valves and align pumps, motors and engines.
  • Complete pipework repairs, modifications and mechanical installations, supporting servicing, inspection and planned shutdowns.
  • Assist with installation and commissioning of new plant and equipment, coordinating with electrical, controls and contractors.
  • Read and interpret drawings and manuals, and accurately complete service reports and maintenance records.
  • Work safely with RAMS, permit-to-work and isolation requirements and maintain housekeeping standards.

Salary: £40,000 per annum plus company van and Veolia benefits

Hours: 40 hours per week plus out of hours and weekend call out rota of 1 week in 5

Location: Mobile across the Cheshire area (Base: Alderley Park, Macclesfield)

As a Mobile Mechanical Technician / Fitter within our local Operations team, you will be responsible for the installation, planned preventative maintenance, fault diagnosis, and repair of industrial utilities plant across two Sites in the Cheshire region. Key equipment includes steam boilers, low-temperature hot water (LTHW) boilers, combined heat and power (CHP) engines, compressors, and water treatment systems.

The role requires a practical, safety-focused engineer with strong mechanical fault‑finding skills and experience working in industrial, commercial or energy-generation environments.

What you'll be doing:

  • Carry out planned, corrective and breakdown maintenance on steam and LTHW boilers, CHP engines, generators, compressors and associated plant.
  • Inspect, diagnose, dismantle, repair, overhaul and recommission mechanical equipment, including pumps, valves, pipework, heat exchangers and rotating machinery.
  • Replace mechanical components such as bearings, seals, gaskets, belts, couplings, filters and valves, and align pumps, motors and engines.
  • Complete pipework repairs, modifications and mechanical installations, supporting the servicing, inspection and planned shutdown of boilers and CHP systems.
  • Assist with the installation and commissioning of new plant and equipment, working closely with electrical, controls, combustion engineers, contractors and specialist suppliers.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, P&IDs, manuals and maintenance instructions, and accurately complete service reports, permits and maintenance records.
  • Work safely in accordance with company procedures, RAMS, permit-to-work and isolation requirements, maintaining high standards of housekeeping and compliance with relevant legislation.

What we're looking for:

  • Recognised mechanical engineering qualification, such as City & Guilds, NVQ/SVQ Level 3, BTEC, ONC or equivalent, ideally supported by a time‑served apprenticeship.
  • Proven experience as a Mechanical Technician/Fitter, Maintenance Engineer or in a similar industrial engineering role.
  • Practical experience working on industrial boilers, CHP systems, engines, pressure systems or related energy plant.
  • Strong knowledge of pumps, valves, pipework, bearings, couplings, seals and rotating machinery, with experience in mechanical fault‑finding, repairs and overhauls.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings, P&IDs and technical manuals, and work safely within permit-to-work and isolation procedures.
  • Able to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, with strong communication, record‑keeping and problem‑solving skills.
  • Safety‑conscious, reliable and methodical, with a commitment to high‑quality workmanship; a full UK driving licence and experience of CMMS, SCADA/PLC systems or Energy Centres would be advantageous but not essential
