Job summary

Tata Steel UK Llanwern is recruiting for a Container Shipping Controller. The role is initially a temporary 6-month assignment with hybrid working (2-3 days in the office) and the rate is £17.45 per hour (£33,120 per annum).

Responsibilities include liaising with customer service on delivery plans, quoting internal units, arranging bookings with shipping lines, and managing customs clearance and SOLAS VGM data. Immediate start is preferred pending checks.

Qualifications

• Experience in an office-based administrative role within logistics or distribution.
• Strong IT literacy and MS Office skills.
• Driving licence and access to own vehicle (cyclists can be accommodated).
• High attention to detail, especially with numerical data.
• Good verbal and written communication with internal and external stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Liaise with customer service teams on delivery plans and production scheduling.
• Obtain, review, and agree rates for trade lanes from shipping lines.
• Provide quotations to internal business units.
• Inform stuffing depots of spikes in requirements to ensure materials are ready.
• Input SOLAS VGM data into the shipping line database.
• Arrange inbound movements and contact shipping lines to make bookings.

Job description

We have an initially temporary Container Shipping Controller role available within Tata Steel UK's Llanwern works. The department specialises in managing container shipping solutions for downstream business units, ensuring the safe, secure, and efficient international transport of premium products. This role is ideal for someone with strong IT literacy skills and is proactive, a clear communicator and holds exceptional attention to detail.

Role

: Container Shipping Controller

Location

(Hybrid: 2-3 days in the office, currently Mondays and Fridays)

Rate

: £17.45 per hour (equivalent to £33,120 per annum)

6 months (Likely to be extended or go permanent)

Shift Patterns:

Monday-Friday, 36.5 hours per week. Flexible start/finish (07:30-08:30 start to 15:45-16:45 finish; finish an hour earlier on Fridays)

Start:

ASAP (within 1-2 weeks) pending the successful completion of a medical, which does require a Drug and Alcohol assessment

Responsibilities:

• Liaising with customer service teams regarding delivery plans and production scheduling
• Obtaining, reviewing, and agreeing on rates for trade lanes from shipping lines
• Providing quotations to internal business units
• Informing container stuffing depots of any spikes in requirements to ensure materials are ready
• Evaluating the melt and pour status for the country of origin prior to booking orders
• Maximising road and rail loads out of the business units into the stuffing depots
• Arranging inbound movements accordingly
• Contacting shipping lines to make bookings upon material delivery
• Managing customs clearance for goods leaving the UK
• Ensuring any paperwork and supporting certification for destination country imports are accurate
• Inputting SOLAS VGM data into the shipping line database
• Previous experience within an office based administrative role, ideally within the Logistics or Distribution sector
• Strong IT literacy, especially MS office
• Driving Licence and access to own vehicle (due to the nature of the works) although cyclists can be accommodated
• High level of attention to detail, especially when handling numerical data
• Problem-solving ability and basic inventory management skills
• Good verbal and written communication skill
• Previous experience liaising with internal and external stakeholders of all level
• The ability to work alone but also as part of a team when required
• Good level of UK Health and Safety knowledge
