Luma Education Recruitment Ltd in Chelmsford is partnering with a newly built residential school to recruit Night Child Care Officers. The role involves waking night shifts, keeping pupils safe, settled and cared for overnight, and recording handovers.

Responsibilities

• Work waking night shifts in the residential provision to keep pupils safe overnight.
• Support bedtime and morning routines, adapting to pupils' sleep patterns.
• Respond calmly to anxious or distressed pupils at night.
• Follow safeguarding, health and safety and building procedures, including alarms and monitoring systems.
• Keep accurate logs and handover notes for the day team.
• Collaborate with the residential and care team to provide a warm, home-from-home environment.
• Monday to Thursday nights, 20:30–07:30.
• Shift includes a one-hour unpaid break on site.

Job description

Pay: £18 – £22 per hour, depending on experience

Hours: Monday to Thursday nights, 20:30 – 07:30 (4 nights a week)

Contract: Temp to perm, ongoing

Luma Education Recruitment is working with a newly built, purpose-built special school in central Chelmsford. It supports pupils with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs and has a residential provision for up to 15 young people. The school is looking for caring, reliable Night Child Care Officers to join its residential team, starting as soon as possible on a temp-to-perm basis.

The role

• Work waking night shifts in the school's residential provision, keeping the young people safe, settled and well cared for overnight
• Support bedtime and morning routines, which can mean earlier starts or later finishes depending on pupils' sleep patterns
• Respond calmly and consistently to young people who may be anxious, unsettled or distressed during the night
• Follow safeguarding, health and safety and building security procedures, including the night alarm and monitoring systems
• Keep accurate records, logs and handover notes for the day team
• Work closely with the wider residential and care team to give pupils a warm, consistent home-from-home
• Monday to Thursday nights, 20:30 – 07:30
• Each shift includes a one-hour unpaid break. You stay on site during the break because external doors are locked and alarmed overnight.

What we're looking for

• Experience in residential childcare, a children's home, SEMH, SEN or a similar care setting (preferred)
• An understanding of, and commitment to, children with complex social, emotional and behavioural needs
• A calm, patient and nurturing approach
• Reliability and good communication skills
• A Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare, or willingness to work towards one, is desirable
