Job summary

Staffordshire County Council invites applications for a Deputy Manager in our residential children’s homes in Stafford. You will support the Registered Manager in daily operations, lead a team, and ensure high-quality care in a safe, nurturing environment. The role requires flexibility for shifts, including evenings, weekends and sleep-ins.

Salary ranges from £46,579 to £50,908 per year on a permanent basis. Interviews commence 19 October 2026; closing date 12 October 2026.

Qualifications

  • Full UK manual driving licence.
  • Level 3/4 in Children’s and Young People’s Workforce or equivalent.
  • Experience working in a children’s residential home.
  • Ability to be a strong role model and leader with staff and looked after children.
  • Willingness to work shifts including evenings, weekends, sleep-ins and bank holidays.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Registered Manager in day-to-day running of the residential children’s home and oversee staff allocations.
  • Encourage individual young people to achieve potential in a safe, caring environment.
  • Ensure compliance with policies, legislation and quality standards including Ofsted requirements.
  • Collaborate with police, social workers, education and health professionals to assess needs and support plans.
  • Deputise for the Registered Manager and manage financial transactions in line with regulations.
  • Monitor care plans and involve children and parents in planning.
  • Maintain records per guidelines; ensure safeguarding and stock management of medications.
  • Oversee building maintenance and general housekeeping; cover at other homes as needed.

As we continue to develop and enhance our in house residential service towards a more therapeutic and trauma-informed offer, we currently have

3 Deputy Manager vacancies for our homes in Stafford.

Working hours vary between the homes, but we operate on 15 hour shifts on a 1 on 2 off basis or a mix of early and late shifts. Our new increased pay range also recognises the challenging nature of the role.

Main Responsibilities

As a

Deputy Manager, you will support young people in the many different aspects of daily life within our homes including:

  • Supporting and working alongside the Registered Manager in the effective day to day running of the residential children’s home, to be responsible for a team of staff and work allocations and to be responsible for all aspects of the residential premises.
  • Supporting encouragement of individual young people to achieve their potential and live life to the full in a safe, caring, consistent environment in which growth and independence are encouraged and nurtured.
  • Ensuring that you and the team work in accordance with the Statement of Purpose that governs the function of the home and it accurately reflects the ethos and stated aims of the home and is regularly reviewed and updated as directed by the Registered Manager.
  • Assisting the Registered Manager in ensuring that correct compliance with all relevant legislations, statutory regulations and Quality standards including those matters that require Ofsted notifications, inspection recommendations and learning from reg 44 reports.
  • Working collaboratively and in partnership with the children, team members and other professionals (Police, Social Workers, Education and Health) to contribute and monitor the multidisciplinary assessment of children’s needs, support children to ensure their needs are met and for them to reach their full potential as outlined in their care plans.
  • Where appropriate, deputising for the Registered Manager ensuring that all financial transactions are certified for payment and conducted within financial regulations and Departmental guidance.
  • Monitoring the implementation of care plans in respect of all children and promote increased participation by children and their parents in their own care planning and other relevant forums to ensure a high quality care and support for the children.
  • Assisting the Registered Manager in ensuring that staff in the establishment maintain appropriate records in accordance with departmental guidelines and procedures.
  • Monitoring and ensure that the use of physical intervention is in accordance with the Departmental Guidelines and Procedures whilst ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all young people including safeguarding and child protection.
  • Ensuring medication is administered to individual young people and ensuring that an adequate supply of prescribed medication, medication is stored in line with policy and legislation and that there are regular stock audits.
  • Monitoring and ensuring that buildings and furnishings are maintained to an acceptable level and to be responsible for some general housekeeping duties including household chores to ensure that the residential home is operating to a high standard.
  • Undertake any other duties required by management, which are commensurate with the grading of the post.
  • This includes covering at other homes across the county which could be at short notice.
  • To be available to work unsocial hours including weekends and bank holidays.
  • To share sleep-in duties
  • To be part of the of the ‘on call rota’ for all homes across the service
The Ideal Candidate
  • Full UK Manual Driving licence
  • Level 3/4 in Children’s and Young Peoples Workforce Qualification or Equivalent
  • Have qualifying experience working in a children's residential home
  • Ability to be a great role model to our looked after children.
  • Be a strong leader with good team management skills, and ability to build trusting relationships with staff and the looked after children.
  • A genuine care and compassion to work with looked after children
  • Flexibility to be able to work shifts that include evenings and weekends and sleep ins and bank holidays.
