Job description

Quantum Engineer - Up to £60,000 dependent on experience

Opportunity

At OQC, we're building the computers of tomorrow right here in the UK - our Quantum Engineers are a driving force behind that. Adding a Quantum Engineer to the team will help us bring new ideas and features into production whilst also working and collaborating with some of the best Quantum Engineers in the UK.

Candidate Profile

You're a highly skilled and driven PhD graduate in a relevant field, ideally with postdoctoral or industry experience. You enjoy combining deep technical expertise with hands-on engineering proficiency and have a passion for solving complex challenges in quantum technologies theoretically. You will be joining a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers, contributing to the development and performance optimisation of quantum systems. If you've led or played a significant role in pursuing independent research, and are able to articulate technical insights effectively across teams, you'll thrive in our environment! Hands-on experience with quantum circuit design, simulation, or qubit calibration is highly advantageous, and we are especially interested in candidates with a deep understanding in these areas.

Role Responsibilities

  1. Managing and owning projects from design through to reporting and analysis of findings for wider team sharing.
  2. Coordinating the scheduling of quantum processing support-infrastructure including control electronics and cryogenic refrigeration for deployed devices, ensuring all systems are prepared and set up ahead of cool-down, and communicating with relevant team members to coordinate timings.
  3. Performing scientific analysis on topics such as QPU design, processor performance, cryogenic payload simulations, and digital filtering techniques using appropriate analysis software tools.
  4. Creating and maintaining process documentation, project plans, and reports within the Advanced Product Development team.
  5. Representing OQC in scientific settings, such as conferences and collaborative consortia, and through authorship of publications.
  6. Providing mentorship, support, and technical knowledge sharing to team members.
  7. Collaborating with the Software Engineering team to communicate requirements for drivers and address concerns highlighted by users or the internal team.
  8. Measuring and characterising superconducting quantum circuits, including processor calibration and benchmarking.

Skills and Experience

Proficiency in Python, especially for automation and advanced data analysis, is essential. You should bring precision, a problem-solving mindset, and be eager to interrogate unknowns and pioneer solutions. Adaptability, intellectual curiosity, and a willingness to challenge assumptions are vital as we push technical boundaries.

Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, are key to sharing findings clearly with scientific and commercial stakeholders. Your collaborative approach will help drive team success in a fast-paced environment.

Minimum Qualifications

A Master's degree in Physics, and a PhD in a closely related discipline, are required. Additional experience within a commercial or research-focused quantum environment will be highly regarded.

Note

Research indicates that women are less likely to apply if they do not meet 100% of these criteria. We encourage applications from candidates who meet at least 75% of the skills and experience listed. Skills can be learned, but diversity cannot.
