Job description

Quantum Engineer - Up to £60,000 dependent on experience

Opportunity

At OQC, we’re building the computers of tomorrow right here in the UK - our Quantum Engineers are a driving force behind that. Adding a Quantum Engineer to the team will help us bring new ideas and features into production whilst also working and collaborating with some of the best Quantum Engineers in the UK.

You’re a highly skilled and driven PhD graduate in a relevant field, ideally with postdoctoral or industry experience. You enjoy combining deep technical expertise with hands-on engineering proficiency and have a passion for solving complex challenges in quantum technologies theoretically. You will be joining a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers, contributing to the development and performance optimisation of quantum systems. If you’ve led or played a significant role in pursuing independent research, and are able to articulate technical insights effectively across teams, you’ll thrive in our environment! If you have hands-on experience with quantum circuit design, simulation, or qubit calibration, that would be highly advantageous—and we’re especially interested in hearing from candidates who have developed a deep understanding in these areas.

As part of the Quantum Applications and Benchmarking team, you’ll work alongside 6 scientists - you’ll be actively involved in:

  • Managing and owning projects from design through to reporting and analysis of findings for wider team sharing.
  • Coordinating the scheduling of quantum processing support-infrastructure including control electronics and cryogenic refrigeration for deployed devices. Ensuring all systems are prepared and set up ahead of cool-down and communicating with relevant team members (Lab technicians, Control Systems & Science Group) to arrange timings of system updates.
  • Performing scientific analysis on topics including, but not limited to, QPU design & processor performance, cryogenic payload simulations and digital filtering techniques. Using appropriate analysis software tools to generate conclusions.
  • Creating and maintaining process documentation, project plans and reports within the Advanced Product Development team.
  • Representing OQC in scientific settings such as conferences, as part of collaborative consortia, and through the authorship of publications.
  • Providing mentorship, support and technical knowledge sharing to team members.
  • Collaborating with the Software Engineering team to communicate requirements for drivers and address any identified areas for concern highlighted either by external users or the internal team.
  • Measuring and characterisation of superconducting quantum circuits including processor calibration and benchmarking.

We’re looking for someone confident in Python, particularly for automation and advanced data analysis. You’ll bring precision and a problem-solving mindset to the role - eager to interrogate unknowns and pioneer creative solutions. Adaptability, intellectual curiosity, and a willingness to challenge assumptions are essential as we continue pushing technical boundaries.

Exceptional communication skills - both written and verbal - will be key to your success, enabling you to share findings clearly with both scientific and commercial stakeholders. Your collaborative approach will help drive team success while delivering measurable outcomes in our fast-paced environment.

A Master’s degree in Physics, and a PhD in a closely related discipline, is required for this role. Additional experience within a commercial or research-focused quantum environment will be highly regarded.

Research has shown that women are less likely than men to apply for this role if they do not have solid experience in 100% of these areas. Please know that this list is indicative and that we would still love to hear from you even if you feel you only are 75% match. Skills can be learnt, diversity cannot.
