Quantum Associate Director Job Opportunity - Birmingham

A Quantum Associate Director position is available in Birmingham, ideal for a high-caliber Quantity Surveyor currently working with a major contractor on sizable UK projects and live contracts.

Suitable candidates will aim to develop a career within a specialist quantum disputes consultancy, progressing towards becoming a disputes and quantum expert.

This challenging construction quantum role requires strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills. It offers a fantastic opportunity for top-tier contractors or PQS Quantity Surveyors to engage with some of the most interesting and complex construction disputes currently being adjudicated, arbitrated, or litigated worldwide.

Responsibilities and Duties

As an Associate Director in the specialist Quantum division, you will collaborate with the Birmingham quantum team, including noted quantum experts and delay team members, to determine the best approach for litigation or arbitration matters to help clients achieve their legal objectives.

Reporting to a Senior Associate Director, you will support their workload by undertaking senior quantum-related duties across arbitration, expert witness, and adjudication assignments, as well as supporting live project work related to contract administration or distressed project issues.

Specific Quantum Associate Director Job Duties:
  • Utilize your strong Quantity Surveying background to analyze construction accounts, costs, values, and payments, identifying errors or opportunities.
  • Receive training to perform technical analyses using appropriate methodologies and prepare reports for use in arbitration and adjudication.
  • Assist in drafting sections of quantum expert reports under supervision, with review by senior staff and quantum experts.
Desired Skills and Experience

Candidates should have recent experience as a Quantity Surveyor with a reputable UK main contractor or a high-caliber PQS/Cost Consultancy.

Key requirements include:

  • At least 3 years of relevant experience in Quantity Surveying or cost controls, covering pre- and post-contract work and contractual matters.
  • Experience managing construction contracts, assessing claims, and some exposure to dispute resolution.
  • Proficiency with key contract forms such as NEC3 ECC & PSC, framework agreements, and bespoke contracts.
  • Experience in claims assessment, dispute discussions, risk management, and contract reviews.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including drafting reports and management documents.
  • Proficiency with relevant software tools like MS Office, MS Project, Primavera P3/P6, Suretrak.
  • Ability to communicate technical material effectively to non-technical audiences.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, creative problem-solving abilities, and teamwork orientation.
Qualifications/Educational Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management, or similar.
  • Desirable: pursuing a Master’s degree in a relevant construction field, especially construction law (LLM).
  • Working towards MRICS or MInstCES qualifications, or willing to pursue these.
