Job description

An established construction and property consultancy is looking to appoint an experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor to join its growing Cost Management team in the West Midlands.

This is an excellent opportunity for a commercially minded and ambitious professional to work on a diverse portfolio of projects across sectors including education, commercial, industrial, retail and aviation. While the majority of projects will be based in the West Midlands, there will also be opportunities to contribute to schemes across the wider UK.

The successful candidate will take responsibility for delivering high-quality pre- and post-contract quantity surveying services, working closely with clients, project managers, contractors and wider project teams to ensure effective cost control, commercial performance and risk management.

This role would suit someone who enjoys building strong client relationships, taking ownership of project deliverables and contributing to the development of a collaborative and successful team.

Key Responsibilities
Cost Management & Commercial Control
  • Deliver pre- and post-contract quantity surveying services across a varied portfolio of construction projects.
  • Monitor project costs, validate contractor and supplier applications, and assess payments to ensure financial accuracy.
  • Prepare and maintain detailed cost plans, budgets and financial forecasts.
  • Produce regular financial reports, providing clients with clear updates on project performance, expenditure and commercial risks.
Procurement & Contract Administration
  • Support and lead procurement activities, including tender documentation, tender evaluation and contractor appointments.
  • Administer a range of construction contracts, ensuring compliance with contractual requirements and agreed procedures.
  • Review and manage variations, assessing the validity and value of quotations and ensuring changes are agreed within appropriate timescales.
  • Work closely with project managers and other stakeholders to maintain accurate project documentation and commercial records.
Risk & Value Management
  • Identify, assess and manage commercial risks throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Contribute to value engineering exercises to improve cost efficiency without compromising quality or project objectives.
  • Provide commercial advice and support to clients, helping them make informed decisions.
  • Monitor project performance against agreed budgets and commercial targets.
Teamwork & Development
  • Build effective working relationships with clients, contractors, project managers and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Provide guidance and support to junior colleagues, helping them develop their technical knowledge and commercial capabilities.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement, sharing best practice and supporting high standards of service delivery.
  • Where appropriate, assist with business development activities, tender submissions and the development of client relationships.
About You

To be successful in this role, you will ideally have:

  • A degree in Quantity Surveying or a related discipline.
  • Chartered membership of RICS, or a strong commitment towards achieving chartership.
  • Experience delivering both pre- and post-contract quantity surveying services.
  • A sound understanding of construction procurement, cost management and commercial reporting.
  • Experience working with JCT and NEC forms of contract.
  • Knowledge of recognised methods of measurement, including NRM.
  • Strong communication, negotiation and stakeholder management skills.
  • The ability to manage competing priorities, work independently and contribute effectively within a wider project team.
  • A proactive and commercially focused approach, with a commitment to delivering high-quality outcomes for clients.
Career Development & Progression

Alongside managing your own project responsibilities, you will have the opportunity to broaden your experience and contribute to the wider development of the team.

This may include mentoring junior colleagues, supporting business development activities, contributing to bids and proposals, sharing technical expertise and helping to improve working practices.

The role offers scope to develop your leadership, commercial and client-facing capabilities while building your long-term career within quantity surveying and cost management.

Salary & Benefits

The successful candidate can expect a competitive salary and benefits package, including:

  • Flexible and hybrid working arrangements.
  • A range of annual leave and employee benefits.
  • Training and continuing professional development opportunities.
  • Support for professional qualifications and chartership, where applicable.
  • Opportunities for career progression and increased responsibility.
  • Benefits designed to support health, wellbeing and work-life balance.
