Job description

Job Description Overview

Shape the places that matter. Build your expertise on projects that define the future. At AtkinsRéalis, we are redefining how projects are delivered across the built environment by bringing together technical excellence, digital innovation and a collaborative mindset.

Our London & Southeast Cost Management team within Buildings & Places delivers some of the UK's most high-profile and impactful developments. We are looking for a motivated Quantity Surveyor / Cost Manager to join our growing team. You will take ownership of defined project responsibilities, deliver high-quality cost management services and develop trusted relationships with clients and project teams. Supported by experienced colleagues, you will continue building the technical, commercial and leadership capability needed to progress to Senior Quantity Surveyor / Senior Cost Manager.

We work hybrid and flexibly across our offices in London (Nova North), Tunbridge Wells, Epsom and Oxford, prioritizing where our clients and teams need us to be. You will join a high-performing team delivering a diverse portfolio across commercial real estate, healthcare, education, public sector, heritage, residential, life sciences and mixed-use development.

This role is suited to a consultant who is approaching professional qualification and ready to take greater responsibility for client-facing delivery. You will manage your own workstreams and smaller commissions, working with Senior Cost Managers, Associate Directors, and Directors on larger or more complex projects.

Your role

Deliver quantity surveying and cost management services across all project lifecycle stages, including feasibility studies, estimates, cost plans, cash flows, commercial reports, benchmarking, cost analysis, value management and commercial assurance to support informed client decisions.

Prepare and review measurements, bills of quantities, schedules of work, tender and contract documentation, while supporting procurement strategy, tender processes, tender analysis, clarifications, and contractor recommendations.

Manage project costs during delivery, including valuations, forecasting, change control, cost reporting, final accounts, fee monitoring, and invoicing, while providing commercial advice and contract administration under JCT, NEC, and other forms of contract.

Identify and communicate project risks, opportunities, key cost drivers, and mitigation measures; attend and contribute to client, consultant, and contractor meetings; and collaborate with project management, building surveying, design, health and safety, engineering, and other specialists to deliver integrated solutions.

Develop strong client and stakeholder relationships, manage workload and governance requirements, contribute to bids, proposals, case studies, market engagement, and repeat business opportunities, support graduates, apprentices, and assistant-level colleagues, and maintain knowledge of construction markets, professional standards, digital tools, and emerging industry practices.

About you

Experience in delivering quantity surveying or cost management services within a consultancy, client-side or contracting environment.

Experience across one or more property or built environment sectors, such as commercial, healthcare, education, residential, public sector, life sciences or mixed-use development.

A sound understanding of pre-contract and post-contract cost management, with practical experience preparing cost plans, estimates, tender documentation and commercial reports.

Working knowledge of UK construction contracts, particularly JCT and/or NEC forms.

Strong numerical, analytical, and commercial skills, with attention to detail and the ability to explain cost information clearly.

Confident communication and stakeholder skills, with the ability to build effective relationships with clients, consultants, and contractors.

An organised and proactive approach, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver reliable outputs to agreed deadlines.

The ability to work independently on defined responsibilities while contributing positively to a collaborative team.

A degree in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management or related discipline.

Either MRICS or approaching MRICS chartership, with accreditation expected within 6 months of appointment.

Competence in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, and relevant industry tools such as CostX or comparable measurement and cost management platforms.

What success looks like

Deliver high-quality cost and commercial advice consistently, accurately, and on time, taking ownership of workstreams, leading smaller or less complex commissions and identifying and communicating risks, change, and emerging issues early.

Demonstrate increasing confidence in client management, project delivery and commercial decision-making, while being recognised by clients and project colleagues as responsive, reliable, and commercially aware.

Contribute positively to team culture, knowledge sharing, and the development of junior colleagues, progress towards MRICS readiness (including internal assessment), and build a clear development pathway towards Senior Quantity Surveyor / Senior Cost Manager.

We will support your continued development through professional, technical and leadership learning, mentoring and access to experienced APC counsellors and assessors.
