Responsibilities

Job description

Salary: c. £45,000- £60,000 per annum (depending on experience)

Travel Requirement: Primarily office-based, with occasional site visits and overnight stays as required.

Role Purpose

The Quantity Surveyor will be responsible for the commercial management of multiple engineering and construction projects from tender handover through to final account. Working closely with the Project Managers and operational teams, the role will ensure projects are delivered profitably while maintaining strong contractual compliance, effective cost control and excellent client relationships.

The Quantity Surveyor will play a pivotal role in protecting Wright Engineering's commercial interests, identifying risks and opportunities, managing subcontractor performance, and supporting the successful delivery of the company's increasingly complex mechanical, civil and multidisciplinary engineering projects.

Key Responsibilities
Commercial Management
  • Take full commercial responsibility for multiple concurrent engineering and construction projects.
  • Produce accurate monthly cost value reconciliations (CVRs) and commercial reports.
  • Identify commercial risks and opportunities, implementing mitigation strategies where required.
  • Maximise project profitability through effective commercial management and contract administration.
  • Support project teams with commercial advice throughout the project lifecycle.
Contract Administration
  • Prepare and issue contractual notices, correspondence and commercial documentation.
  • Assess contractual obligations, risks and entitlements.
  • Manage change control processes, including valuation of variations and compensation events.
  • Support the resolution of commercial disputes and contractual issues where necessary.
Procurement & Subcontract Management
  • Manage subcontractor valuations, payment applications, variations and final accounts.
  • Monitor subcontractor performance against contractual and commercial requirements.
  • Develop strong working relationships with suppliers and subcontract partners.
Cost Control & Reporting
  • Prepare and submit client applications for payment and interim valuations.
  • Support monitoring of project expenditure against approved budgets.
  • Produce accurate financial forecasts and cost reporting for senior management.
  • Prepare and negotiate final accounts with clients and subcontractors.
  • Support financial audits and maintain comprehensive commercial records.
Project Collaboration
  • Work closely with Project Managers, Engineers, Site Managers and Design teams throughout project delivery.
  • Attend internal progress meetings, client meetings and commercial reviews.
  • Provide commercial input during project planning, programming and risk management activities.
  • Support tender reviews and provide commercial feedback to estimating teams.
Leadership & Continuous Improvement

Mentor and support Assistant Quantity Surveyors and junior commercial staff.

Promote best practice in commercial management across the business.

Contribute to the continuous improvement of commercial systems, procedures and reporting.

Essential

Skills & Experience Required

Degree qualified in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management or a related discipline.

Proven experience as a Quantity Surveyor within engineering, construction or heavy industrial sectors.

Strong knowledge of JCT, NEC and other standard forms of contract.

Demonstrable experience managing multiple projects simultaneously.

Excellent commercial awareness with strong negotiation and analytical skills.

Experience managing subcontract procurement, valuations and final accounts.

Proficient in Microsoft Excel and commercial management software.

Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to project sites.

Desirable

Chartered (MRICS) or actively working towards Chartered status.

Experience in mechanical engineering, process plant, bulk materials handling or heavy industrial projects.

Understanding of fabrication, off-site manufacturing and multidisciplinary project delivery.

Knowledge of project controls, cost forecasting and earned value principles.

Experience supporting tender submissions and pre-contract commercial activities.
