Job summary

Vertical Recruitment Limited is seeking a Quantity Surveyor to support a major electricity transmission project. Based in Manchester, you will join the project commercial team and help manage financial and contractual aspects across the programme.

Job description

An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Quantity Surveyor to join an established and growing construction consultancy, supporting the delivery of a significant National Grid infrastructure programme.

The consultancy has a strong and expanding presence across the UK infrastructure market, working with major clients across energy, utilities and nationally significant capital programmes. Continued investment in this area has created an opportunity for a Quantity Surveyor who wants exposure to complex infrastructure work while developing their commercial and NEC experience within a consultancy environment.

Based from Manchester, you will become part of an experienced infrastructure team and work directly on a major programme forming part of the ongoing investment and reinforcement of the UK's electricity transmission network.

The Project

The role will support a major new electricity transmission connection, designed to strengthen capacity and resilience between key areas of the UK transmission network.

The wider programme incorporates the development of a new 400kV substation, alongside approximately 17-29 miles of new high-voltage overhead transmission infrastructure and associated enabling works.

This is a substantial, technically complex infrastructure programme involving multiple work packages, interfaces and stakeholders. It provides the opportunity to gain experience on a project of genuine national significance, with exposure to the commercial management of large-scale energy infrastructure from development and procurement through to construction and delivery.

The Role

Working as part of the project commercial team, you will support the effective financial and contractual management of the programme.

Your responsibilities are likely to include:

• Cost planning, forecasting and financial reporting
• Supporting procurement and tendering activities
• Commercial management of contractors and supply chain partners
• Assessment of applications, valuations and payments
• Change control and management of compensation events
• Contract administration, with exposure to NEC contracts
• Monitoring project costs against budgets and forecasts
• Supporting risk and opportunity management
• Preparation of commercial reports for the client and wider project team
• Working closely with Project Managers, technical teams and other consultants
• Supporting projects through procurement, construction and delivery

The position offers significant client exposure and the opportunity to develop your commercial capability within a major infrastructure environment.

About You

We are interested in speaking with Quantity Surveyors who have experience within infrastructure, utilities, energy, water or other major capital programmes.

You will need previous experience working with NEC contracts, alongside a strong grounding in Quantity Surveying and commercial management. You should be comfortable working within a complex project environment, managing commercial information and engaging with multiple project stakeholders.

Ideally, you will have:

• A degree or equivalent qualification in Quantity Surveying or a related discipline
• Experience working as a Quantity Surveyor within a consultancy, contractor or client-side environment
• Good commercial and cost management fundamentals
• Practical experience working with NEC forms of contract
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
• The confidence to work within a multidisciplinary project environment
• An interest in developing a long-term career within energy and infrastructure

Working Pattern

The role will be based from the consultancy's Manchester office, operating on a hybrid basis.

Typically, you will spend around 2-3 days per week working collaboratively from either the Manchester office or project locations, with the remainder worked remotely.

Travel to the project will generally be required 1-2 days per week, depending on project requirements. Project/site days count towards the office attendance expectation, rather than being additional days on top.
