Job summary

Vertical Recruitment Limited is assisting an established multidisciplinary construction consultancy in Manchester to recruit an experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor for its expanding Infrastructure team.

You will manage the commercial aspects of major infrastructure projects across the North West, including NEC3/NEC4 contracts, valuations, forecasts and procurement, while supporting and mentoring junior team members.

Qualifications

• Experience with NEC3 and NEC4 contracts on large infrastructure programmes.
• Proven track record in cost management across major infrastructure projects.
• Degree in Quantity Surveying or related discipline; MRICS beneficial.

• Manage costs, budgets, forecasts and overall commercial performance across infrastructure projects.
• Prepare valuations, cost reports and financial forecasts.

We're working with an established multidisciplinary construction consultancy that is continuing to expand its Infrastructure team in Manchester.

The business is involved in some of the UK's most significant infrastructure and capital investment programmes, with a particularly strong presence across energy, power, utilities and major civil engineering.

This is a great opportunity for an experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor who wants to build their career within infrastructure, working on complex, long-term programmes that are supporting the modernisation and resilience of the UK's energy and infrastructure networks.

The Opportunity

Joining an established infrastructure team, you'll provide commercial and cost management expertise across major projects and capital investment programmes throughout the North West and wider UK.

The work is varied, with the wider infrastructure portfolio spanning:

• Electricity transmission, distribution and major grid upgrade programmes
• Renewable and low-carbon energy infrastructure
• Utilities and water infrastructure
• Nuclear and highly regulated environments
• Major civil engineering
• Ports, marine and transport infrastructure

A significant proportion of the current workload sits within the energy and utilities market, including major investment into electricity networks, transmission infrastructure, network resilience and the infrastructure required to support the UK's transition towards a lower‑carbon energy system.

You'll work closely with clients, Tier 1 contractors, engineers, Project Managers and programme controls teams, giving you good exposure to both the commercial and wider delivery aspects of major infrastructure projects.

What You'll Be Doing

As Senior Quantity Surveyor, you'll take responsibility for the commercial management of your projects and provide advice directly to clients throughout the project lifecycle.

• Managing costs, budgets, forecasts and overall commercial performance across infrastructure projects
• Working with NEC3 and NEC4 contracts, including compensation events, early warnings and change control
• Preparing valuations, cost reports and financial forecasts
• Monitoring expenditure, cash flow, commercial risk and budget performance
• Supporting procurement, tender evaluation and contract reviews
• Providing commercial input throughout different stages of project delivery
• Working closely with contractors, consultants, clients and wider project teams
• Identifying commercial risks, opportunities and potential efficiencies
• Supporting value engineering, final accounts and commercial close-out
• Supporting and mentoring more junior members of the team

This isn't a role where you'll simply be producing reports in the background. You'll be working closely with project teams and clients, with the opportunity to take real ownership of commissions and become a trusted commercial adviser.

What We're Looking For

We're interested in speaking with experienced Quantity Surveyors who have developed their careers within infrastructure, utilities, power, energy or major civil engineering.

• Previous experience as a Quantity Surveyor or Senior Quantity Surveyor within an infrastructure environment
• Good working knowledge of NEC3 and/or NEC4
• Experience managing change, compensation events, forecasting and commercial reporting
• Exposure to large-scale infrastructure or capital investment programmes
• Strong commercial awareness and confidence working with project data
• The ability to build relationships with clients, contractors and wider project teams
• A degree in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management or a related discipline

MRICS or progress towards chartership would be beneficial but isn't essential.

Experience within power, utilities or transmission infrastructure would be particularly relevant to the current workload.

Manchester & Hybrid Working

You'll be based from the consultancy's Manchester office, working on a hybrid basis across home, office and project locations.

There will be a requirement to spend time on live projects and client sites, typically weekly or bi-weekly depending on the commission and project requirements, so you'll need to be comfortable travelling when required.

The balance gives you the flexibility of consultancy working without losing the hands‑on exposure that comes from being close to clients, contractors and project delivery teams.
