Job summary

Nicholas Associates Group is seeking an experienced Quantity Surveyor to join our client’s commercial team in Eastbourne. You will manage the commercial delivery from award to final account on major rail and highways schemes, ensuring robust cost control and accurate reporting.

You will lead subcontractor accounts, assist procurement, and mentor junior team members while maintaining strong client relationships and complying with contract obligations.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management or related discipline.
  • Membership of RICS or CICES desirable; working towards is acceptable.
  • CSCS card desirable; PTS certification desirable for rail projects.

Responsibilities

  • Manage commercial performance of allocated projects from contract award to final account.
  • Monitor costs, forecasts, profitability and cash flow; prepare CVRs and reports.
  • Administer contracts, manage change control and commercial risks.
  • Support procurement, subcontractor selection and payments.
  • Prepare interim valuations, claims and final accounts; support client meetings.

The Opportunity

Our client is a leading civil engineering and infrastructure contractor delivering major rail and highways projects across the UK. They are looking to appoint an experienced Quantity Surveyor to join their commercial team, supporting the successful delivery of multiple projects, based in Eastbourne. This is an excellent opportunity for a commercially focused Quantity Surveyor looking to develop their career within a well-established business working on high‑profile infrastructure schemes.

Key Responsibilities

As Quantity Surveyor, you will be responsible for the commercial management of projects from contract award through to final account. Your duties will include:

  • Managing the financial and contractual performance of allocated projects.
  • Monitoring project costs, forecasts, profitability and cash flow.
  • Preparing and maintaining accurate cost plans, financial reports and project forecasts.
  • Administering contracts in line with contractual obligations and change control procedures.
  • Identifying and managing commercial risks and opportunities.
  • Supporting procurement activities, including subcontractor selection and appointment.
  • Managing subcontractor accounts, including valuations, payments, variations and final accounts.
  • Preparing, negotiating and agreeing claims where required.
  • Producing monthly commercial reporting, including Cost Value Reconciliations (CVRs), cost reports and commercial commentaries.
  • Attending project meetings and carrying out regular site visits to monitor progress and commercial performance.
  • Supporting monthly cost reviews with clients and internal stakeholders.
  • Ensuring all commercial documentation is maintained accurately and in accordance with project requirements.
  • Resolving commercial issues and supporting contractual negotiations where necessary.
  • Building strong working relationships with clients, project teams, subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Supporting and mentoring junior commercial team members where appropriate.
  • Promoting best practice and contributing to continuous improvement across the commercial function.

  • Timely preparation of CVRs, monthly reports and commercial documentation.
  • Effective cost control and change management.
  • Prompt submission of customer applications and valuations.
  • Successful management of subcontractor accounts and payments.
  • Agreement of interim valuations, claims and final accounts.
About You

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Proven experience working as a Quantity Surveyor within the civil engineering or infrastructure sector.
  • Experience delivering rail, highways or major infrastructure projects.
  • Strong knowledge of contract administration and commercial management.
  • Experience managing subcontractor accounts and procurement processes.
  • Excellent commercial awareness with strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • The ability to manage multiple priorities and meet project deadlines.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Confidence working independently while collaborating effectively with project teams.
  • Good IT skills, including experience with commercial and cost management software.
Qualifications
  • Degree in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management or a related discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • Membership of, or working towards, RICS, CICES or another relevant professional body is desirable.
  • CSCS Card (desirable).
  • PTS certification (desirable for rail projects).
