Job summary

Mott MacDonald in Belfast seeks a Quantity Surveyor to join the Advisory and Programme Delivery team, supporting commercial management on clean water, wastewater and environmental projects.

You will manage budgets, evaluate compensation events, review payments, and mentor juniors. Degree qualified with MRICS preferred or working towards chartered status; hybrid working is available with a comprehensive benefits package.

About the business unit Mott MacDonald’s Advisory and Programme Delivery(APD) unit delivers both project, programme & commercial management (PPCM) services and advisory solutions across the built environment, defence, energy, water, environmental, transportation, health and care sectors.

We deliver tailored solutions that directly address our clients’ key challenges, combining our world‑leading project expertise with unrivalled programme delivery capabilities and advisory services.

APD delivers services to projects ranging in scale and complexity up to £20bn, through the technical disciplines of programme management, project management, project controls, scheduling, cost management, estimating, infrastructure finance, management consulting, digital consulting and education, health and care management.

About the division

Our multidisciplinary experts help water, wastewater, and government organisations find sustainable, cost-effective solutions to the challenges of climate change, net‑zero, water scarcity and environmental protection.

We work with around half of the UK’s regulated water and wastewater companies, and our work stretches across the entire project lifecycle – from pre‑contract cost estimating and benchmarking, to post‑contract quantity surveying and commercial assurance.

For project and programme management, we deliver capital projects on behalf of our clients, both internal and external that range from several hundred thousand pounds in value to major projects and programmes worth over £0.5bn.

Overview of the role

As Quantity Surveyor you will report to the Senior Quantity Surveyor and will assist on the commercial management on various interesting clean, waste‑water and environmental projects. As part of a Core Team within the ENW Portfolio, you will work closely with the wider Advisory Project and Programme management teams to manage the project deliverables to the Client expectations. You will demonstrate a passion to work collaboratively with our client teams to deliver their complex projects to time, cost and quality with a commitment to safety. You will drive innovation of our service delivery and provide advice to the team and an integrated client. You will take ownership of and responsibility for the successful delivery of your projects, identifying and monitoring project risks and opportunities, managing stakeholders taking account of their levels of influence and particular interests and ensuring good project governance.

Key responsibilities and duties include:
  • Commercial management of a project or multiple projects, including:
  • Budget management including month end reporting (actuals, monthly variances, accruals and annual variances)
  • Risk management and reporting
  • Dispute resolution / avoidance
  • Offering commercial strategy advice
  • Review and recommendation of subcontractor acceptance
  • Assessment of compensation events
  • Assessment of monthly payment applications
  • Mentoring of junior members of team
  • Ideally Chartered QS MRICS or working towards chartered status (MRICS) and a commitment to CPD (Continuing Professional Development)
  • Cost planning skills and experience of delivering ideally within a cost consultancy / multi‑disciplinary environment
  • Previous experience of contract administration, cost estimates and NEC contracts
  • Relevant experience working in water, environment and regulated industries
  • Ideally degree qualified
  • Ability to operate both autonomously and as a part of a larger team
  • Strong communication skills including writing reports and presenting
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with clients, stakeholders, colleagues and the supply chain
  • Ability to demonstrate a flexible approach to work
  • Flexibility to travel to client sites and other MM offices
