QA Lead - London based publishing client
Location: Remote (*with initial office visits during onboarding and then only quarterly planning sessions)
We're looking for a QA Lead to help shape and drive quality across a portfolio of high-profile digital products for a household publishing name. You'll play a key role in establishing testing governance, defining best practice, and ensuring quality is embedded throughout the software delivery lifecycle.
This is an ideal opportunity for a Senior QA Engineer ready to step into a leadership role, or an existing QA Lead who enjoys a hands‑on position balancing strategy with delivery.
Working closely with Engineering Leadership and Principal Engineers, you'll act as the quality champion across the engineering function, providing guidance, challenge, and direction on how testing should be approached and executed.
While this role is predominantly remote, you'll be expected to attend the office occasionally to meet the team during onboarding and for quarterly planning and collaboration sessions.
The role:
- Define and implement QA standards, governance, and best practices for QA across multiple products
- Partner closely with Engineering Leadership to drive a quality‑first culture.
- Guide and mentor 2 QA Engineers, providing technical leadership and support without direct line management responsibility.
- Review existing testing approaches and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Analyse end‑to‑end user journeys and ensure comprehensive test coverage across critical workflows.
- Support teams in developing effective automated and manual testing strategies.
- Collaborate with engineers to improve quality practices throughout the SDLC.
- Assess new and existing platforms, identifying gaps in quality processes and helping teams establish scalable testing approaches.
- Leverage modern AI‑assisted testing tools and techniques to increase quality, efficiency and coverage.
Skills & Experience:
- Strong experience in software testing and quality assurance within modern engineering environments.
- Experience leading QA initiatives, frameworks, or testing governance across multiple teams.
- Strong understanding of end‑to‑end testing and user journey validation.
- Hands‑on experience with Playwright.
- Experience establishing QA processes, standards and governance in Agile delivery environments.
- Ability to influence engineers and senior stakeholders on quality standards and testing approaches.
- Experience balancing automation with pragmatic manual testing where appropriate.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Experience with Jest and supporting engineering teams with unit testing best practices.
- Experience working with CMS platforms, particularly WordPress or digital publishing environments.
- Experience in media, publishing, editorial, or content‑focused organisations.
- Experience testing editorial workflows and content publishing journeys.
- Exposure to AI‑assisted testing tools and modern quality engineering practices.
What good looks like
- Establishing clear QA standards and governance across engineering teams.
- Improving confidence in releases through stronger automated test coverage.
- Ensuring critical customer and editorial journeys are thoroughly tested end‑to‑end.
- Acting as a trusted quality partner to Engineering Leadership and Principal Engineers.
- Helping teams build quality into products from the outset rather than treating testing as a final stage.
