Job summary

Bilfinger UK is delivering the Highview Power Carrington LAES project, a 50 MW / 300 MWh Liquid Air Energy Storage facility in Greater Manchester. As a QA Engineer you will prepare QA documentation, review ITPs, and support QA activities across ME&I disciplines on this FOAK scheme.

You will liaise with Welding Engineers, project engineers, and third-party inspectors, maintain records in the BMS, and drive continuous improvement and KPI monitoring.

Qualifications

• Good Engineering and QA/QC background.
• Development of project QA documentation (Quality Plans, ITPs).
• Knowledge of pipe standards and NDT techniques.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and review Quality Plans, Inspection and Test Plans and supporting QA documentation.
• Provide Quality related technical support for the project.
• Review vendor/supplier Quality Plans and Inspection and Test Plans.
• Liaise with Welding Engineers and Project Engineers regarding QA requirements.
• Coordinate and advise on material certification, welding, NDT and other QA requirements.
• Coordinate the QA/QC Engineering function within ME&I for BP FPS.
• Liaise with 3rd party inspectors and coordinate the Inspection function.
• Raise CIFs and liaise with Client’s QA departments.
• Ensure quality records are maintained in the BMS and monitor KPIs.
• Contribute to improvement and technical capabilities of the Company.
• Quality Auditing – Internal and External, support the on-site QA team.

Highview Power Carrington – LAES Project (FOAK)

50 MW / 300 MWh Liquid Air Energy Storage Facility | Greater Manchester

First‑of‑a‑kind, commercial‑scale greenfield delivery of a 50 MW / 300 MWh Liquid Air Energy Storage (LAES) facility, supporting long‑duration energy storage and the UK’s net‑zero transition.

The project utilises proprietary LAES technology, converting surplus renewable electricity into stored liquid air, with later pressurisation and reheating to drive turbines for electricity generation.

Role / Scope (Bilfinger UK)

• Principal contractor for Mechanical, Electrical & Instrumentation (MEI) construction, including structural steelwork
• Delivery of complex, safety‑critical systems within a novel technology environment
• Working within a large high‑performing, multi‑disciplinary integrated delivery team on a technically challenging FOAK scheme

As a QA Engineer, your activities will include the following, but are not limited to:

• Prepare and review Quality Plans, Inspection and Test Plans and supporting QA documentation.
• Provide Quality related technical support for the project
• Review vendor/supplier Quality Plans and Inspection and Test Plans.
• Liaise with Welding Engineers and Project Engineers in relation to submission of documentation and QA requirements for projects / maintenance.
• Co‑ordinate and advise guidance on material certification, welding, NDT and other quality requirements.
• Co‑ordinate the QA/QC Engineering function within M, E & I disciplines for BP FPS.
• Liaise with 3rd party inspectors and co‑ordinate the Inspection function.
• Raise Continuous Improvement Forms (CIFs) as appropriate and liaise with Client’s QA departments.
• Ensure all quality documentation/records are maintained within the Company’s Business Management System (BMS).
• Ensure quality performance monitoring is maintained and reviewed accordingly against KPIs.
• Contribute to the improvement and technical capabilities of the Company.

• Support the existing QA team on site

Qualifications

• CSWIP Level 3.1 Welding Inspector
• PCN level 2 – MPI / DPI
• Recognised Lead Auditor qualification (9001)
• ONC/HNC Mechanical Engineering (Desirable)
• Radiograph Interpretation (Optional)

Experience

• Good Engineering and QA/QC background.
• Knowledge and experience in Quality Management Systems.
• Development of project QA documentation (Quality Plans, ITPs etc.) and review of supplier QA documentation.
• Knowledge and familiarity with KPIs and performance monitoring techniques.
• Able to read and understand isometric drawings.
• Understanding of and familiarity with pipe standards and specifications.
• Radiographic interpretation.
• Computer literate; knowledge of Microsoft Office suite essential.
• Understanding of fabrication, welding and NDT techniques.
• Good communication and report writing skills.
