Job summary

Birmingham City Council is seeking a Public Realm Culture Officer to drive the city’s public art and realm strategy. The role leads key initiatives, coordinates projects, and provides specialist advice on public art and development schemes.

Applicants should have significant public art experience, a degree-level qualification, and strong governance and budget management skills. The role includes occasional evenings and weekends to meet project needs.

Help Shape Birmingham's Public Realm

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join Birmingham City Council as a Public Realm Culture Officer, playing a key role in delivering the city's ambitious public art and public realm vision. This role will lead and support the implementation of the city's Public Art and Realm Strategy, helping to embed creativity into regeneration, infrastructure, and placemaking projects across Birmingham.

What You'll Do

• Lead delivery of Birmingham's Public Art and Realm Strategy.
• Coordinate and implement key strategic projects and initiatives.
• Provide specialist advice on public art and public realm matters across the Council.
• Work closely with planning, highways, regeneration and cultural partners to embed public art into development schemes.
• Lead and coordinate the Council's Public Art Gateway Group.
• Develop policies, procedures and frameworks that support public realm delivery.
• Identify funding opportunities and prepare grant applications.
• Manage artist commissions from concept through to installation and handover.
• Monitor public art assets across the city and support maintenance planning.
• Manage project budgets, procurement processes, payments and reporting.

What You'll Need

• Significant experience within public art, visual arts, public realm, cultural development or a related discipline.
• A degree-level qualification or equivalent relevant professional experience.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience working within governance, risk management and decision-making frameworks.
• Experience engaging with communities, stakeholders and partner organisations.
• Proven project and budget management experience.
• The ability to develop and implement systems, policies and procedures.
• Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and deliver results.
• Knowledge of current public art and public realm trends and issues.
• Availability to work occasional evenings, weekends and bank holidays when required.
