Job description

Public Affairs Officer

Edinburgh / Cardiff / London

£33,479 for Edinburgh or Cardiff and £37,500 for London

18 months contract, full-time, 35 hours per week

The Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) champions the power of planning in creating prosperous places and vibrant communities. We represent over 27,000 members worldwide, supporting them throughout their careers. We shape planning policy, raise professional standards and are the only body in the UK to confer Chartered status to planners, the highest professional qualification.

Planning is currently one of the most important topics across the devolved nations and this role will be at the heart of discussions over the next 18 months with the upcoming national elections. This is an opportunity to join a successful team of policy and public affairs professionals at a critical moment for the planning profession. This role will lead the institute’s engagement with the devolved governments as they grapple with how the planning system can better address the housing crisis, kick start economic growth and protect and enhance nature.

The RTPI works closely with the devolved governments influencing policy, legislation and priorities for the built environment. This role will work closely with the Chief Executive, the Director of Wales, Northern Ireland and Planning Aid England, the Director of Scotland, Ireland & English Regions and the Head of Policy and Public Affairs to ensure our messages and asks are being heard throughout the devolved nations.

We are looking for an ambitious public affairs professional with a desire to help shape the role and raise the profile of the Institute among decision-makers and policy-influencers. You will have a good working knowledge of devolved governments, Whitehall and Westminster and a keen appreciation of what politicians and advisors need from professional bodies.

RTPI has a positive, supportive and inclusive work environment that actively operates a policy of helping its employees at all levels to achieve professional growth. We seek to foster a collaborative and respectful work environment that promotes equality, diversity, and inclusion.

Closing date: 7th May 2025.

Interview date: 16th and 19th May 2025.
