Job summary

First Bus is recruiting a PSV/HGV mechanic in Ipswich. The role focuses on diagnosing faults, completing repairs, and performing servicing to ensure vehicles stay safe and reliable.

You will also handle routine inspections, breakdown responses, and road tests with compliance to health and safety standards. Applicants should have Level 3 NVQ/SVQ or City & Guilds in vehicle maintenance and repair, plus HGV/PSV experience and a valid UK driving licence.

Qualifications

• Level 3 NVQ/SVQ or City & Guilds equivalent in vehicle maintenance & repair.
• Experience on HGV or PSV vehicles.
• Valid UK driving licence.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose faults and carry out mechanical repairs to keep vehicles running safely and reliably.
• Perform scheduled servicing, routine inspections and preventative maintenance.
• Respond to on-road breakdowns and recoveries as required.
• Road test vehicles to verify repairs and document work in line with regulations and health & safety standards.

Key Details

• £21.12 per hour
• Weekend premium rate of £22.19 per hour
• Minimum 39 hours per week
• Approx. £42,831 per annum
• 5 days over 7 Rotation of early and late shifts: 07:00-15:00 one week then 12:00-20:00 the next week
• £2,000 JOINING BONUS!

In this hands-on role, you’ll keep vehicles running safely and reliably by diagnosing faults, completing mechanical repairs and replacing parts when needed. You’ll carry out scheduled servicing, routine inspections and preventative maintenance, as well as responding to on-road breakdowns and recoveries. You’ll also road test vehicles where required and make sure all documentation is completed accurately and in line with regulations and health and safety standards.

What We’re Looking For

• Do you have a Level 3 NVQ/SVQ or City & Guilds equivalent in vehicle maintenance & repair?
• Do you have experience working on HGV or PSV?
• Do you have a valid UK driving licence?
• Do you also have a strong attention to detail and a passion for mechanics?
