Job summary

Mott MacDonald Bentley are seeking a Protection and Control Design Engineer to join the growing BESS team in Leeds. You will lead protection scheme development for HV assets, interfacing with substations and networks while mentoring junior engineers.

You'll work across AC/DC schematics, protection logic, relay diagrams, and co-ordination studies, ensuring G99/G100 compliance and safe, reliable operation of BESS assets within a fully integrated design-and-build environment.

Qualifications

• Degree/HND/HNC in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems preferred).
• Experience with consultancy, contractor or utility in Power industry.
• Experience designing HV AC protection systems 11kV–132kV; 275kV/400kV exposure is a plus.
• Understanding of HV/EHV substation standards and TO/DNO specs.
• Proactive, initiative-taking mindset.

Responsibilities

• Develop protection schemes for transformers, feeders, switchgear and BESS inverters.
• Prepare AC/DC schematics, protection logic, relay diagrams, and coordination studies.
• Create line diagrams, cable block diagrams, wiring diagrams, schedules, reports.
• Specify CTs, VTs, relays, protection panels and marshalling kiosks.
• Contribute to short-circuit, load flow and fault-level studies; coordinate with TO/DNOs.
• Develop SCADA interfaces and communications architectures for BESS/PCS/BMS.
• Ensure designs comply with G99/G100, DNO/G81 standards and contract specs.
• Collaborate with other design disciplines and support installation teams.
