Job summary

King John’s House & Museum in Romsey, Hampshire is seeking a Project Officer to lead a major restoration and redevelopment programme, ensuring NLHF compliance and delivering on time and budget.

As the day-to-day lead, you will coordinate consultants, contractors, staff and volunteers, reporting to trustees and funders, with flexible, hybrid working options during 2027 reopening. This 12-month fixed-term role offers substantial heritage impact.

Qualifications

• Proven project management experience within the heritage sector.

Responsibilities

• Adhere to NLHF procurement regulations for selecting consultants, contractors and suppliers.
• Act as the day-to-day project lead and primary contact between the Museum and the consultant teams.
• Coordinate activities across all workstreams to ensure collaboration.
• Facilitate internal and external meetings, including board briefings and funder reporting.
• Ensure outputs comply with Heritage Fund standards and good practice.
• Assist Trustees with project management and reporting to funders.
• Oversee consultants and monitor progress against briefs and programmes.
• Develop the evaluation plan, collect data and prepare the final evaluation report.
• Liaise with NLHF and complete project monitoring reports and grant drawdowns.
• Operate a risk-management process and monitor project finances and reporting.

Help Shape the Future of One of Hampshire’s Most Historic Sites

King John’s House & Museum is seeking an experienced and enthusiasticProject Officerto help deliver a significant restoration and redevelopment programme following the devastating fire that affected parts of our historic site in February 2025.

Located in the heart of Romsey, directly opposite the iconic Romsey Abbey, King John’s House & Museum is an independent accredited museum and charitable trust. Our unique site comprises a Grade I listed medieval hall, Grade II listed Tudor cottage, museum café, gallery spaces, offices and heritage gardens, representing more than 800 years of continuous history.

As restoration works progress towards reopening in 2027, we are looking for a skilled project professional to work alongside our dedicated staff team, trustees, consultants and funders to ensure the project is successfully delivered on time, on budget and to the highest heritage standards.

The Role

The Project Officer will act as the day-to-day lead for the project, coordinating consultants, contractors, staff and volunteers while ensuring compliance with National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) requirements.

This is an exciting opportunity to play a pivotal role in the recovery and future development of a nationally significant heritage asset.

Key Responsibilities

• Adhere to NLHF Financial and Procurement regulations with regard to the selection and
• appointment of consultants, contractors and suppliers. Carry out these procurements working
• with Trustees and staff. Prepare procurement reports for the Heritage Fund
• Act as the day-to-day project lead and primary contact between the Museum (client) and the
• consultant teams
• Co-ordinate activities and outputs across all workstreams, ensuring seamless collaboration
• Facilitate internal and external meetings, including board briefings, design team meetings and funder reporting
• Ensure all project outputs comply with Heritage Fund standards and good practice
• Support the preparation and submission of reports to other external funders of the project as
• required
• Liaise with and assist the Trustees and the Working Group in the execution of the project and the management of the programme
• Oversee the work of consultants, monitoring outputs and progress against agreed briefs and
• programmes.
• Oversee the partnership working development and pilot activities.
• Devise the evaluation plan, collect data and carry out the final evaluation report
• Liaise with NLHF and complete the project monitoring reports and grant drawdowns- working
• with the Museum Manager and Treasurer
• Operate a risk management process for all activities based on a comprehensive risk register to identify, analyse and respond to project risks.
• Monitor project finances, reporting to the Trustees.

We are looking for someone with excellent organisational and communication skills and a strong background in heritage project delivery.
