Within our consulting business, we combine leading-edge practical expertise with project delivery consultancy to unlock the potential of every project.

The project:

Our client is one of the UK's largest water companies, responsible for water and wastewater services across England. Their mission is to deliver services sustainably, economically, and socially responsibly, creating long-term value. We provide a range of services focused on programme and project management and seek opportunities to add value through expert and strategic staffing. Your role involves planning and leading a programme of works delivered by an 'Area delivery team' comprising the client’s partners and contractors, aligned with their corporate values and standards, including health and safety, target operating model, and outcomes related to regulation, customer satisfaction, and resilience. You will act as the interface between the delivery team and senior management, managing internal and external stakeholders to ensure successful programme delivery in line with business strategy.

Our values shape our approach to consulting and define the qualities we seek in our team members:

Safety first - Going home safe and well:
  • Promote Mace's safety values, exhibit safety behaviors, share lessons learned, and utilize safety frameworks to support staff wellbeing.
  • Possess technical expertise in local health and safety regulations relevant to the project portfolio.
  • Champion a diverse, inclusive, and wellbeing-focused working environment.
Client focus - Deliver on our promise:
  • Manage quality systems to ensure service excellence.
  • Deliver and oversee project plans from inception through to handover, ensuring milestones are met.
  • Support project teams and stakeholders to ensure timely and accurate delivery.
  • Manage projects throughout their lifecycle, from concept to closeout.
  • Develop and update project management plans, monitor progress, and address risks and issues proactively.
  • Drive design development, site surveys, and site visits to prepare works information aligned with the business case.
  • Handle contract administration, with a thorough understanding of NEC3/4 contracts.
  • Ensure project quality, timeliness, and budget adherence.
  • Prepare specifications, tender documents, and assess tenders for contract awards.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental, health and safety standards, and legislation.
  • Conduct reviews, inspections, and audits regularly.
  • Manage contractors to meet client satisfaction.
  • Oversee contract administration tasks such as payments and notices.
  • Coordinate third-party engagements like planning and land negotiations.
  • Understand client needs and manage complex stakeholder relationships.
Integrity - Always do the right thing:
  • Manage budgets, identify risks, and implement mitigations.
  • Support the development of your business unit for sustainability.
  • Make a positive impact and uphold Mace’s values, holding others accountable.
Create opportunity - For our people to excel:
  • Lead design and consultancy teams collaboratively.
  • Manage project teams and stakeholders to meet KPIs.
  • Network actively and leverage Mace’s knowledge resources for best practices.
Qualifications and experience:
  • A degree in engineering, construction, or project management, with membership in a relevant institute (e.g., ICE, IMechE, IET, IChemE, RICS) and completion of the APM PMQ course.
  • Based in the northwest of England, with willingness to travel across multiple sites.
  • Preferably water sector experience; regulated infrastructure experience also valuable. Minimum 10+ years project management experience required.
  • Proficient with project management tools like Oracle and Primavera P6.
  • Experience managing large infrastructure projects, ideally in water utilities, and eager to advance your career.
  • Full UK driving license is essential.
Additional desirable qualities:
  • Membership of RICS, CIOB, APM, ICE, or similar.
  • Property or infrastructure project management expertise.
  • Strong commercial and financial skills.
  • Experience working within diverse teams and stakeholder environments.
  • Knowledge of sustainability and carbon considerations in projects.
