Job summary

Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust is seeking a Project Manager to lead Digital Radiology initiatives within the SWASH+ service. You will own daily management and delivery of major schemes, guiding them from business case to implementation and closure, coordinating cross-functional teams and external suppliers.

The role requires PRINCE2 knowledge, Master’s degree, NHS experience, and strong stakeholder engagement.

Qualifications

  • Highly developed interpersonal skills and ability to develop collaborative relationships with stakeholders.
  • Ability to lead projects and adapt methodologies to project complexity.
  • Experience delivering digital or healthcare projects within NHS or similar environment.

Responsibilities

  • Own the planning of the project, develop the project initiation document, and set milestones and resources.
  • Coordinate changes to business processes with clinical and non-clinical staff to realise benefits from digital technology.
  • Manage relationships with clinical and non-clinical stakeholders within the trust and with partner organisations.
  • Manage project resources and contribution to delivery.
  • Develop key project documents including PID, risk/issue logs, financial tracker, benefits log.
  • Identify and mitigate issues and, if needed, escalate to the project board.
  • Monitor progress, budget, and quality; take corrective action as needed.
  • Apply PRINCE2 project management methodology.
  • Support procurement with external suppliers to ensure delivery of scope.
  • Identify dependencies with other projects and ensure alignment with SMT and PACS Managers.

Job Description

NHS Band 6 Salary: £39,959 - £48,117 per annum

Hours per Week: Full time 37.5 hrs

Contract type: Permanent

As a key member of the SWASH+ Service Management Team, the Project Manager will take ownership of the day-to-day management and delivery of Digital Radiology projects. Acting under the delegated authority of the project board, the post holder will be responsible for driving one major scheme or several smaller initiatives through the entire project lifecycle—from initial business case development and detailed planning through to implementation and project closure. The Project Manager will play a central role in ensuring that all assigned projects are delivered efficiently on time, and within budget. This includes coordinating resources, managing risks, engaging stakeholders, and adapting to emerging needs. In addition to structured projects, the role will also involve the planning and execution of ad hoc change initiatives within SWASH+, ensuring agile and effective responses to service demands and digital transformation goals.

Key Responsibilities,
  • Owning the planning of the project, developing the project initiation document and agreeing project milestones, timelines and resources.
  • Coordinate with Clinical and Non-clinical staff the facilitation of changes to business processes needed to realise the benefits from new digital technology.
  • Actively managing relationships with clinical and non-clinical stakeholders both within the trust and in other partner organisations.
  • Managing project resources and their contribution to project delivery.
  • Owning the development of key project documentation including project initiation document, risk and issue logs, financial tracker and benefits log.
  • Identifying and mitigating issues and, when necessary, escalating them to the project board for support.
  • Monitoring plans and overall progress and use of resources, taking corrective action where necessary to ensure that the deliverables of the project are produced on time, within budget and to the expected quality.
  • Applying trust project management methodology (PRINCE2).
  • Supporting the procurement process where necessary, working with external suppliers to hold them accountable for delivery of their scope of work.
  • Identifying dependencies with other projects within and outside the SWASH+ Consortium and working with other members of the SMT and PACS Managers to ensure they are met.
  • Communicating project plans, progress and issues through regular highlight reporting.

  • Ability to work on own initiative, leading and motivating other staff to deliver set objectives on time and within target.
Desirable
  • Demonstrable ability to lead large, complex projects.
  • Previous experience of patient workflows, patient care and working within the NHS.
Essential

  • Evidence of ongoing professional development.
  • Understanding of diagnostic imaging services and systems (Specifically PACS & RIS).

  • Understanding of healthcare information and information systems.
  • Project Management qualification (e.g. PRINCE2).
  • Understanding of current Information Governance legislation and policy.
