Job overview

To promote and facilitate safe, effective, high-quality, and cost-effective prescribing and medication management in the local area and across Greater Manchester.

To lead project management for various clinical and non-clinical workstreams within the locality and on behalf of Greater Manchester, managing multiple projects simultaneously.

To provide technical input as part of the Medicines Optimisation Team within GP practices and the wider community.

To offer leadership and support to Pharmacy Technicians at the same or lower band within the locality and across Greater Manchester.

To assist with the daily management of the Pharmacy Technician team locally as needed.

Main duties of the job
  • Identify, implement, and deliver Medicines Optimisation, primary care quality, and QIPP objectives.
  • Influence prescribing habits of prescribers in primary and secondary care.
  • Support local and GM Medicines Optimisation teams to plan, manage, and effectively deliver work programmes, strategies, and priorities.
  • Work on GP practice-based prescribing and primary care initiatives to help practices meet targets while optimising medicines management.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships and be a key team member outside of own organisation.
  • Support local authorities to improve and assure medicines optimisation in care homes and for patients receiving care at home.
  • Regularly produce, analyse, interpret, and present financial and clinical prescribing data to target support and monitor targets.
  • Possess advanced skills to explain prescribing, financial, and quality data to prescribers, making recommendations for corrective actions and influencing prescribing patterns.
  • Lead own projects and some GM-wide projects in project management.
  • Develop, implement, and complete clinical and non-clinical audits.
  • Create and implement SOPs, guidelines, policies, and protocols for the locality and Greater Manchester.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
  • Communicate complex financial information to prescribers and practice managers about performance against budgets, standards, and targets.
  • Provide complex and sensitive medication-related information to patients and carers via verbal, written, or digital communication.
  • Offer clinical advice to prescribers on issues like medication value, antibiotic resistance, and shared care protocols.
  • Lead meetings discussing contentious prescribing issues with external teams.
  • Support and develop internal and external communications, including prescribing alerts.
  • Utilise advanced computer skills to analyse patient prescribing and clinical data using GP systems and BI portals like ePACT2, GM Tableau.
  • Review and develop repeat prescribing systems and support projects to improve medication management in practices.
  • Contribute to strategic planning for the upcoming financial year at the locality level.
  • Organise medication reviews in care homes and homes, developing complex action plans for medicines optimisation.
  • Conduct detailed medication reviews at surgeries, homes, and care facilities, providing specialist advice and liaising with healthcare professionals.
  • Provide expert advice on complex medication issues, including covert medication, PEG administration, and palliative care medications.
Person specification
Professional registration
  • Registered Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
Experience
  • Significant experience as a primary care Pharmacy Technician
  • Experience in prescribing data analysis
  • Experience in project management and supporting change processes
  • Proficiency in creating and managing spreadsheets using Excel
  • Ability to nurture key relationships and maintain professional networks
