Navis Consulting is looking for a Design Engineer to lead the design coordination of complex cruise ship newbuild projects. You will drive engineering from initial design through to technical approval, working with project managers, shipyards and suppliers to ensure compliance with maritime standards.

The role requires a strong background in marine engineering design, proven project coordination skills and the ability to review technical documentation across multiple disciplines.

An opportunity is available for a Design Engineer to contribute to the development and delivery of complex cruise ship newbuild projects.

This role would suit an engineer with experience taking engineering design projects through the full project lifecycle, from initial design development through to technical approval and completion. Combining engineering knowledge with strong project coordination skills, you will work across multidisciplinary teams to ensure design activities progress in line with project requirements, technical specifications and regulatory standards.

Working closely with project management, shipyards, suppliers and technical stakeholders, you will help coordinate engineering deliverables, resolve technical challenges and ensure design solutions meet the required safety, compliance and operational standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Coordinate engineering design activities throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring deliverables progress in line with agreed requirements and project objectives.


• Review engineering drawings, calculations, specifications and technical documentation to ensure designs meet the required standards.


• Work collaboratively with project managers, engineering teams, shipyards, suppliers and other stakeholders to coordinate technical activities and resolve outstanding issues.


• Monitor design progress, identify potential risks and dependencies, and help ensure technical deliverables remain on schedule.


• Support the resolution of engineering challenges, design discrepancies and technical interfaces across multiple disciplines.


• Ensure engineering solutions align with project specifications, contractual requirements and applicable maritime regulations.


• Coordinate technical documentation and support classification society submissions, design reviews and approval processes.


• Contribute to technical discussions and decision-making, ensuring engineering issues are addressed and actions are progressed effectively.


• Support the management of design changes, ensuring technical implications are understood and relevant stakeholders are informed.


• Contribute to design reviews and lessons learned, identifying opportunities to improve engineering processes and consistency across projects.

Candidate Requirements

The successful candidate will have a background in engineering design and the ability to coordinate technical activities across a complex project environment.

You will ideally demonstrate:

• Experience in engineering design within the marine, shipbuilding, offshore or a comparable engineering sector.


• Experience contributing to or managing engineering design projects from initial development through to completion.


• The ability to interpret and review engineering drawings, calculations, specifications and technical documentation.


• An understanding of engineering standards, regulatory requirements and technical compliance.


• Experience working within multidisciplinary engineering teams and coordinating activities across different stakeholders.


• The ability to identify and resolve technical issues while maintaining design quality and project progress.


• Strong organisational and communication skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines.


• A proactive approach to problem-solving, technical coordination and project delivery.


• Experience in cruise shipbuilding, passenger vessels or other complex maritime projects.


• Experience working with classification societies such as DNV, Lloyd's Register or ABS.


• Familiarity with classification approvals, technical submissions and design verification processes.


• Experience coordinating engineering activities between shipyards, suppliers and technical teams.


• Exposure to design standardisation, continuous improvement and lessons-learned initiatives.

Qualifications

A bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture, Structural Engineering or another relevant engineering discipline.

Relevant experience in engineering design, technical documentation and multidisciplinary project delivery is essential.
