Job description

Project & Applications Engineer

Energy from Waste | Odour Control | Environmental Engineering

Location: Bough Beech, Kent - Hybrid or Remote

Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience

The Opportunity

Our client is an established SME operating within the environmental engineering sector, supplying specialist products, technologies and installation services to customers across the wastewater, Energy from Waste (EfW), municipal waste and wider industrial sectors worldwide.

With recently developed and acquired technologies strengthening their offering to the Energy from Waste market, the business is looking to expand its presence and increase market share. To support these ambitions, they are seeking a technically competent, enthusiastic and proactive Project & Applications Engineer to help drive the continued growth of their EfW and odour control product lines.

This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer who enjoys combining technical problem-solving with commercial development and project delivery. You will play a key role throughout the project lifecycle, from understanding client requirements and developing technical solutions through to preparing proposals, managing projects, coordinating installation and overseeing commissioning.

Working closely with clients, suppliers, subcontractors and internal colleagues, you will develop practical, commercially competitive engineering solutions that meet customer requirements and can be delivered safely, efficiently and to the highest standards.

As part of a small, collaborative business, you will have the opportunity to take ownership of projects, contribute ideas and help shape the development of an expanding technology portfolio within the environmental and waste treatment sectors.

Key Responsibilities
  • Applications Engineering & Proposals: Prepare technical and commercial proposals, defining project scope, developing engineering solutions, obtaining supplier quotations, preparing cost estimates and contributing to pricing and tender submissions.
  • Client Engagement: Work directly with customers to understand their technical and operational requirements, clarify specifications and develop appropriate solutions.
  • Project Management: Take ownership of projects from initial enquiry and proposal development through order placement, execution, commissioning and final handover.
  • Engineering & Design: Produce, review and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, calculations and technical documentation to support project development and delivery.
  • Project Delivery: Coordinate engineering, procurement, manufacture, installation and commissioning activities, ensuring projects are completed safely, on time, within budget and to the required quality standards.
  • Commercial Management: Monitor project costs and expenditure, manage variations and changes to scope, identify commercial risks and opportunities, and help protect and achieve project margins.
  • Supplier & Subcontractor Management: Obtain quotations, coordinate technical information and work with equipment suppliers, manufacturers and subcontractors to ensure project requirements are met.
  • Health, Safety & Risk Management: Prepare and review risk assessments and method statements, undertake design risk assessments and contribute to HAZOP studies where required.
  • Testing & Commissioning: Coordinate and attend factory acceptance tests (FATs), site acceptance tests (SATs), installation activities and commissioning.
  • Technical Support & Troubleshooting: Investigate technical issues, resolve problems during project execution and provide after-sales technical support where necessary.
  • Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities to improve engineering solutions, proposal development and project delivery processes, supporting the ongoing development of the company's EfW and odour control technologies.
The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for an engineer who combines sound technical knowledge with commercial awareness, strong organisational skills and a practical, solutions-focused mindset.

You will ideally have:

  • An HNC or equivalent qualification in a relevant engineering discipline, preferably MEICA, process engineering or a related field. Candidates with suitable relevant experience will also be considered.
  • Demonstrable experience in project engineering, applications engineering, project management or a similar technical and commercial role.
  • Experience preparing technical and commercial proposals, quotations or tender submissions for engineering equipment, products or projects.
  • Experience managing engineering projects across the full lifecycle, from initial enquiry and solution development through to installation, commissioning and handover.
  • An understanding of project cost control, supplier quotations, procurement and commercial project management.
  • The ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications and associated documentation.
  • A good understanding of engineering risk assessments, method statements and relevant health and safety requirements.
  • Strong communication skills, with the confidence to engage effectively with customers, suppliers, subcontractors and colleagues.
  • The ability to organise and prioritise multiple proposals and projects simultaneously.

Experience within Energy from Waste, anaerobic digestion (AD), odour control, air pollution control, waste treatment or environmental engineering would be advantageous.

Above all, you will be proactive, commercially minded and comfortable working independently within a small team. You will enjoy developing practical engineering solutions, taking responsibility for projects and contributing to the growth of an ambitious business.

Location & Working Arrangements

The company's office is based in Bough Beech, Kent, although a hybrid or remote working arrangement may be considered depending on the successful candidate's location and experience.

Occasional attendance at the office will be required, alongside travel to client sites, supplier facilities and project locations as necessary.

Why Apply?

This is an opportunity to join a growing environmental engineering business at an exciting stage in its development. With new technologies and an expanding Energy from Waste offering, the successful candidate will have the chance to take ownership of varied engineering projects, work directly with customers and suppliers, and make a tangible contribution to the company's commercial and technical success.

If you are an engineer who enjoys the combination of applications development, technical problem-solving, commercial proposals and end-to-end project delivery, we would be keen to hear from you
