Job summary

Atrium Accounts in York invites applications for an Accounting Technician apprenticeship. You will learn on the job, handling financial documents, ledgers, VAT, payroll and management reports while developing accounting competence.

The apprenticeship lasts 1 year 9 months, starting 1 October 2026. Training is provided by THE FERNANDES AND ROSARIO CONSULTING LIMITED, with wages of £15,600 in year one and potential increases with age.

Qualifications

  • GCSE in Maths and English (grade 4) is required.
  • AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and organise financial documents for processing and check accuracy.
  • Maintain accounting records for multiple companies; process ledger transactions and prepare final accounts.
  • Carry out bank reconciliations and ensure records are complete and up to date.
  • Review and submit VAT returns.
  • Prepare management accounting information and reports.
  • Support with payroll preparation and processing.

Summary

The primary purpose of this role is to provide administrative and accounting support to the Accountant. The successful applicant will gain practical experience across a range of accounting and tax duties, including preparing financial and management accounts, maintaining records and assisting with tax returns for small and larger businesses.

Wage

£15,600 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You'll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work
  • Preparing and organising financial documents ready for processing, checking information for accuracy and resolving any discrepancies.
  • Maintaining accounting records for a number of companies, including processing sales and purchase ledger transactions and preparing final accounts.
  • Recording corrections, adjustments, voids and cancellations accurately within the accounting system.
  • Carrying out bank reconciliations and helping to ensure financial records are complete and up to date.
  • Reviewing and submitting of VAT returns.
  • Preparing management accounting information and reports.
  • Supporting with the preparation and processing of payroll.
  • Managing and prioritising your daily workload to meet deadlines.
  • Communicating professionally with colleagues, clients and other contacts by telephone and email.
  • Welcoming visitors and providing general administrative and office support when required.

  • Collate and analyse financial information, and show how that information can be used most effectively to support value creation within an organisation.
  • Apply accounting principles and adhere to legislation to ensure records are accurate and compliant with law or company policy when delivering accounting activities, such as the financial accounting of single entities, limited companies or partnerships or management accounting activities for an organisation.
  • Apply professional scepticism when undertaking accounting activities to inform and evaluate decision making on the content of true and fair accounts, being alert to conditions that may indicate possible misstatement of financial information due to error or fraud, establishing the facts sensitively and being aware of unconscious bias.
  • Interpret financial information for accounting purposes, such as using judgement to determine the correct way to report or account for transaction or undertaking ratio analysis.
  • Participate in or support others with quality improvement activities, for example the improvement of personal working practices.
  • Use software packages to assist with accounting tasks in line with cyber and data security requirements, using data securely and safely, including backing up data.
  • Deliver accounting tasks with a critical eye to transactions and trends, demonstrating a 'right first time approach'.
  • Use workload management principles to plan, organise and prioritise own tasks, and manage time effectively.
  • Use accounting information to add value to the organisation through use of data visualisations, analysis and interpretation, and communicate financial information in a way that facilitates understanding for non-finance stakeholders.

Training schedule

Training will take place weekly, either face to face at FAR Accountancy Training, Tower House in Askham Bryan or Online-live and will include some self-study assignment work as well.
