Job description

The Production Team Leader is the line manager for the Process Leads and is accountable for creating the conditions that enable them to manage their teams and deliver safe, compliant and efficient pharmaceutical manufacturing. The role translates production priorities into clear expectations, equips Process Leads with the skills, knowledge, systems and capacity needed to deliver, and maintains oversight of performance without routinely taking over the activities owned by Process Leads.

As a visible senior production leader, the Production Team Leader coaches, challenges and develops Process Leads; removes barriers; assures the effectiveness of their leadership; and holds them accountable for results. Success is achieved through capable and empowered Process Leads who deliver production targets, GMP compliance, quality, safety, engagement and continuous improvement through their teams. The role also provides leadership cover in the absence of the Production Manager.

Key Role and Responsibilities
1. Safety
  • Hold Process Leads accountable for ensuring activities within their areas comply fully with HSE requirements.
  • Develop Process Lead capability to create a proactive safety culture in which hazards, near-misses and incidents are reported and addressed promptly.
  • Coach and assure Process Leads in the quality of safety investigations and implementation of corrective and preventive actions.
  • Ensure Process Leads sustain high standards of housekeeping and environmental compliance across manufacturing areas.
  • Ensure Process Leads provide informed operational input to risk assessments, validation and qualification activities.
2. Quality
  • Set clear expectations for GMP compliance and assure that Process Leads embed those standards across their teams.
  • Build Process Lead capability to translate regulatory expectations, data integrity, contamination control and required operator behaviours into daily practice.
  • Coach and hold Process Leads accountable for timely, high-quality non-conformance investigations and effective CAPA implementation.
  • Ensure Process Leads maintain inspection-ready areas and are prepared to represent their operations during internal, customer and regulatory inspections.
  • Role-model visible quality leadership and strengthen compliant decision-making at every leadership level.
  • Ensure Process Leads oversee the accurate, timely and compliant completion of batch documentation by their teams and carry out effective first-line reviews in accordance with approved procedures.
  • Create effective interfaces between Process Leads and Quality to support timely batch review, issue resolution and release activities.
  • Equip Process Leads to plan, communicate and embed approved changes effectively within their teams.
3. Delivery
  • Translate short and medium-term production plans into clear priorities, standards and decision boundaries for Process Leads.
  • Equip Process Leads to deliver output, yield and Right First Time (RFT) targets through effective daily leadership of their teams.
  • Maintain oversight of area and shift performance, using coaching and constructive challenge to ensure risks, non-conformances and capacity constraints are identified and escalated appropriately.
  • Set the standard for daily operational meetings, KPI reviews and visual management, enabling Process Leads to run these routines effectively.
  • Ensure Process Leads have the information, skills and capacity to deploy resources effectively and maintain operational continuity.
  • Coach Process Leads to resolve operational issues at the appropriate level, while acting as the senior escalation point for material risks or cross-functional barriers.
4. Cost
  • Develop Process Leads to identify, prioritise and support continuous improvement opportunities by setting expectations and hold Process Leads accountable for measurable gains in safety, quality, delivery, efficiency and cost.
  • Enable Process Leads to deliver improvement activities by removing barriers, resolving cross-functional issues and securing appropriate support and resources.
  • Agree staffing overtime and agency cover requirements, and hold Process Leads accountable for managing resources effectively within agreed arrangements.
  • Coach Process Leads to identify inefficiency and support cost improvements without compromising safety, quality or compliance.
5. People
  • Lead, coach and develop Process Leads as people managers, setting clear expectations for their leadership of production teams.
  • Equip Process Leads to manage performance, attendance, conduct employee wellbeing confidently and consistently in line with site HR processes.
  • Use regular one-to-ones, observation, feedback and development plans to strengthen Process Lead judgement, confidence and accountability.
  • Ensure Process Leads have the time, information and support to lead effectively, removing barriers and enabling them to make decisions without unnecessary escalation.
  • Support Process Leads to build an inclusive and open working environment where associates raise issues early and concerns are addressed promptly.
  • Identify and address Process Lead development needs through coaching, mentoring, stretch assignments and succession planning.
  • Provide Process Leads with the tools, standards and time to maintain current, compliant and inspection-ready training records in MySource, ensuring their teams are trained, qualified and competent for their assigned work.
  • Support Process Leads to work effectively with Quality, Engineering, Warehouse, Supply Chain, HR and Technical teams to resolve cross-functional issues.
Education
  • Degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant scientific / engineering discipline, or substantial relevant experience within pharmaceutical or regulated manufacturing.
Experience
  • Significant experience leading, coaching and developing people managers or front-line leaders within a pharmaceutical or regulated manufacturing environment.
  • Proven experience of improving safety, quality, delivery, cost and people performance by developing front-line leaders, setting clear expectations and holding them accountable for results.
