Job summary

Sagentia Innovation in Cambridge seeks a hands-on Product Development Consultant to drive hardware and software integration across medical, industrial, defence and consumer sectors. You will join a multidisciplinary team delivering world-leading product development within a consultancy setting.

You will work on requirements development, early prototyping, and full lifecycle delivery, moving concepts to manufacturable products.

Qualifications

• A degree in Mechanical Engineering or Product Design with 2:1 or higher.
• Experience in developing new products and platforms in consultancy or commercial settings.
• CAD design experience with SolidWorks or CREO.
• Analytical skills including tolerance analysis, FEA, and multiphysics modeling.
• Ability to work across disciplines in a client-facing role.

Responsibilities

• Manage projects or work packages to tight timescales throughout full product development lifecycle.
• Collaborate across electronics, software, and mechanical teams to deliver designs.
• Translate concepts into manufacturable products and support transfer to production.
• Provide pre-sales input and interface with clients under guidance.

The Opportunity

We are looking for an exceptional, hands-on product developer to join our group of world class employees. If successful you will have the opportunity to work with clients from start-ups through to global market leaders. You will have a passion for technology and will use a combination of innovation, flexibility and technical excellence to meet and exceed our customers’ often demanding requirements and tight development timescales. You will work across the product development lifecycle.

• Requirements development and qualification to inform new concept generation activities.
• Technology validation through early-stage risk reduction prototyping
• Detailed product development and ultimately transfer to manufacture.

A Day in the life

You will have the opportunity to employ your product development skills on one or more projects simultaneously across sectors.

Projects range in length anywhere from a couple of months to a couple of years. Many of our projects require a multidisciplinary approach involving our electronics, software and applied science teams and of course the mechanical and product design team that you will be part of. This role has a focus on the creation and delivery of new product designs to our clients.

Recent examples of our work have included:

• Development of core delivery engine technology for consumer beverage dispensing
• Development of a Laparoscopic surgical robotic system: control interfaces, robotic manipulators and surgical instruments
• Development of a topical cream dispenser in the personal care space
• Improvements in the efficiency of negative pressure wound therapy systems through design innovation

You will have the opportunity to develop

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills - confidence and capability in a client facing role
• Business development expertise by providing pre-sales input and assistance, interfacing directly with clients under the guidance of our business development team

Your work will predominately be based at our Sagentia innovation offices in Harston, Cambridge. There may also be opportunities to travel and work at other Science Group sites and businesses within the UK and to client sites in Europe or USA. You will enjoy a fast-paced environment in which we solve a variety of problems from different industries.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

• A Degree (2.1 or above), in Mechanical Engineering or Product Design or other relevant engineering discipline plus industry experience
• Development experience to include the new products and platforms, ideally gained within a consultancy or commercial environment
• CAD design experience (preferably with SolidWorks and/or CREO)
• Analytical skills ranging from tolerance analysis to employing tools such as FEA and Multiphysics modelling (COMSOL), through to first principles engineering calculations, potentially using tools such as MATLAB and MATHCAD
• Enthusiasm to work in a multidisciplinary team across diverse market sectors
• Experience of contributing to projects or work packages to tight timescales
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills- confident and capable in a client facing role

You might also have (but not essential):

• Project management experience in delivering complex products
• Experience of developing products under the regulatory constraints required for medical products
• Mechatronic design experience for complex electromechanical products such as robotics
• Experience of designing complex plastic parts for moulding
• Experience of design for manufacture and assembly
